[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
When I think of the Port of Brisbane, I think of ships, and containers, and things of that nature, and that is all there, but there is another side to it that I was introduced to, and that is the more natural side, running along the Moreton Bay Marine Park. This is an area rich in wild habitats with mangroves, extensive intertidal flats, sea grass areas, and wildlife.

Richard Cridland (rcrick) introduced me to this area. The diversity of wildlife is incredible, with a great array of various types of birds and other wildlife. This shot was taken close to the Port of Brisbane Visitors Centre, very close to where Rick shot his Osprey. Brahminy Kites, Ibis, Kingfishers and other birds nest in those mangroves. If you’re in the area, drop in to the Visitors Centre. They are quite helpful, they have a great cafeteria for a quick break, and they have a couple of blinds set up where you can see some shore birds. You need to get a key from the centre.

For this particular shot, the tide was low so you could see the mud flats extending into the mangroves. The White Faced Heron you see on the right seems to live here. This was the second day we had come to this area, and the second time we saw the bird feeding up and down this shore.

Workshop:
I follow a generic workflow now as outlined in my Bio.
Details and differences to this are as follows:
Shot taken at 122mm, ISO 250, f/5.6, 1/500 sec
Used overlay layer with 5-10% opacity black and white brush for dodging and burning
Lightened forest with duplicate layer with screen blend – rest of shot was masked
Saturation (incremental +5 to master, +5 to yellow hue - based on proof colours compare)
Saved at 73% quality for 296K (detail such as this takes a lot of memory)

Hi John,

Hope you don't mind I've taken the liberty of adding this to the theme I've done on the P.O.B, in all the times I've been down their I've never got a shot like this, the detail is excellent, wonderful shadows and light, excellent d.o.f, and the inclusion of the White Faced Heron just makes for a perfect image, really nice work mate,

Great shot of this important habitat - you have captured the yellow-green of the mangroves really well. The egret adds interest to the shot.

Mangroves are not the prettiest of places but you have captured it well. Good colour and nicely composed with the bird on bottom right quarter. AussiDi and I are heading down there on Sunday so I hope we catch some lovely birds. If not, the cafeteria sounds good for a coffee. We never stray too far from coffee shops on our field trips.

Hello John,
Great habitat shot of some Mangrove close to Brisbane city. Nice sharpness and lighting and the Little Egret is clearly visible and indication of the potential of the place. Would be great to visit...

excellent nature shot i love to see the white bird
the White Faced Heron, take this same image,
without and with that bird on the image,
it wont be the same, the Heron on this image
did this photography much beautiful

the bird is not small but in this image it is and it is

Hi John. You have a knack for finding so many interesting corners of Australia. Fresh eyes see so much. Mangroves are supposedly a very productive area for life. Good composition showing the trees, the mud and a little muddy water at low tide. TFS. Murray.

Hello John. This view looks very much like our mangrove swamps and so does the population that you mentioned in your note. I like the low tide capture exposing the roots of this swampy area with light cutting across the frame bringing out good contrast. The bird on the muddy water balances this shot rich with natural habitat. Thanks fo sharing and best regards. Jusni
