Brown, or Common Noddy (Anous stolidus).

As this Noddy is clearly calling, it might just as well be a New Year greeting.

I wish everyone on TN, especially those friends who are active, A Happy and Healthy New Year and may your wishes for 2009 come true.

The Brown Noddy is found in many tropical seas around the world as several sub-species and pictures of it have been shown on TN a couple of times before. Noddies are so-called because of the nodding-head behaviour that pairs have during the breeding season
We took a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef to visit a small sandy island called Michaelmas Cay. Michaelmas Cay is a small sandy coral cay (1.5 ha in area and 3.5 m high) lying 43 km north-east of Cairns. The cay sits on the western tip of Michaelmas Reef.

Michaelmas Cay is a major seabird nesting island, the birds providing enough nutrients for the growth of some vegetation. The main breeding species are Sooty Terns, Crested Terns, Brown Noddies and Lesser Crested terns.
Apart from enjoying the birdlife we also snorkelled and saw some of the 1500 species of fish found on the Great Barrier Reef, a wonderful experience and part of a wonderful day.

This individual is standing on a post holding a rope that prevents visitors from disturbing the nesting birds on the Cay. They seem to be relatively unafraid of humans and I was able to photograph this one at a distance of about 4 meters (13 ft).

This image was slightly cropped, sharpened and adjusted for light levels as the strong light was very harsh for photography.

Hi Ivan,

It's the last day of the year and you have probably just introduced me to my last new (for me) bird for 2008! Of course he is uttering a New Year greeting. I love his pose, the opened beak and the shape of this bird. Maybe I'll get to see one for myself this winter! Once again, a healthy and happy New Year to you and Ulla. See you here next year!!

Jane

Hello Ivan and welcome to 2009 ... it is here anyway ;)
A good shot of this Noddy on the Cay.
The exposure is quite dark but it looks as though the bright light was a real challenge.
Still plenty of detail though.
Hope you have a good start to 2009 Ivan.
Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Ivan,
a superb shot of this Brown Noddy!
Very sharp and clear.
Nice light.
Great composition.

Well done and Happy New Year!

p.s thankyou very much for adding me as a favourite :-)

I am wondering now about time zones..has it gone as I post ...time warps...in many ways but images stay the same unless we alter them to the point of extinction..which you have not..and you bird harbors no evil nor bad will but brings on a new found Robin perhaps..or a small cure chick of one or the other aviaries...a herald.....your archives are much deeper than mine!

Hi Ivan,
I like the title very much. it really come out from the Noddy.
Lovely composition of this unique bird ( to me, none in My country I guess). It stands out very well against the whitish BG.
Very sharp and clear with light well calculated.

hello Ivan
you made an excellent shot of this noddy, beautiful pose and colors. I like the bec open
very well down

Hello Ivan,
First of all a Happy New Year. Probably the second time already..:-).
I wish you and your family a happy and healthy 2009...
Never heard about a Noddy before and I couldn't find a Dutch translation. Surprisingly it's a tern specie 'cause I actually thought trens were smaller birds...
This one looks as it has the size of a gull or something...

Hallo Ivan
A lovely capture of this Common Noddy. A bird that I have never seen nor heard of before. Well framed, with the most notable details, especially the sharp tweezer beak is most impressive. This is just a stunning image with all technical aspects being great. The dark colour of the feathers very clearly seen and your great photographic skills paid of well in this image. The white around the eye displays great. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
I also want to use this opportunity to thank you for adding me to your list of favourites. To be counted amongst photographers like Bayram, Gert Ellstrom, Howard Cheek and Loot is indeed an honour and your kind gesture is much appreciated.

Hi Ivan

Ha-ha-ha, you are so right – 2008 was nothing but a whoosh.
Seems like the older I get the faster time flies by.
You've done great work with the exposure levels and the harsh lighting conditions
while showing this darkish bird against the unforgiving bright BG.
The features of the bird are clearly visible and beautifully aided by the well balanced contrast.
Actually the vivid BG makes this bird stand out like a sore-thumb and it is rather
complimentary to the subject.

Thanks for the good wishes for 2009. The same to you and your loved ones too.

Well done and TFS
Best regards
Loot

Hello Ivan !
Wow, that is a wonderful bird - he is very elegant, and I love his dark colors. You captured nice details on the plumage, and I also like the sober colors, almost black and white, it's really in the winter-mood. You also managed to freeze the bird with open beak, which looks great.
I hope 2009 started well for you and for all those you love,
Valerie.

Hello Ivan,

Thank you for the good wishes as well as for your remarcable contribution to TN. I also wish you a Happy New Year.

The photo you have posted is very well made having a good and sharp image. The strong light you have captured rendered many color tones of the evenly colored bird. The POV you have chosen was very good showing most of the bird.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Ivan,

Excellent sharp shot of this common noddy. Common as it might be but I have never seen one of this before. Nice perch in almost monochromatic color. Very good framing and well managed light and shadow here.

Regards,
Jusni

Very interesting bird, its beak looks great slightly opened. Good background. Beautiful image. Congratulations!
