The Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae) is a rare finch confined to the tropical woodlands of Northern Australia.
This shot was captured at the Northern Territory Wildlife Park in one of the many excellent large aviaries they have.

I have observed this species in the wild on several occasions, and watching a flock of 50 odd birds of this species coming to drink at a waterhole is a site to behold.
Once relatively common, the species suffered a serious population decline in the late 20th century due to an apparently unprecedented epidemic of the infectious air sac mite. The population is now slowly recovering. During the end of the dry season, this species forms loose flocks with other finch species to drink at permanent waterholes near the coast, but disperses to breed during the wet season (December-May) in savannah woodlands associated with stony hills. The nest is built in a tree hollow or termite mound and 3-6 eggs are laid.
This shot is of a female, the males are even more resplendent. The black-headed form illustrated here is the common variation, however red-headed and golden-headed forms also exist and are occasionally observed in large flocks. This shot was cropped and levels slightly adjusted to reduce the brightness of the right-hand background.

A beautiful picture of a beautiful bird. Interesting note, as well. I thought, though, that it looks a little bit fuzzy, so I made a workshop with some sharpening and saturation. Hope you like it.
Two points anyway for capturing such a great shot of this beautiful bird.

A very colorful picture - the workshop shows how it could be sharpened, though you have to be careful - in the WS there the white artifact around the top of the head is even more apparent. If you go back to the original before you applied levels and other corrections, with "layers" you could really crisp it up.

You have there a beautiful subject, but the focus is a bit soft, and it's very noisy.
leaving more space on the right side would have been good.

Chris you have a great pose. Would have been a winner with better focus. Colours are great. The workshop is a big improvement.
