We had a lovely afternoon here at Emily Bay. The sun was really hot, and the water was so crystal clear, and not cold after the initial shock... Apart from those in the glass bottom boat checking out the colourful fish, there were only 8 of us on the beach.

Norfolk Island is but a speck on the surrounding two million empty square miles of seascape. In the South Pacific Ocean, this three by five mile volcanic outcrop is a subtropical paradise - but a paradise which has known inhuman brutality.

Emily Bay is Norfolk Island's main swimming beach. The Bay is protected from the Pacific Ocean by a small coral reef, and it is the only safe area for recreational swimming. It is fringed by a stand of Norfolk Island Pines and is located at the eastern end of Kingston.

The bay’s coral reef at its sea-side edge protects it from waves and makes it a safe and beautiful area for swimming and snorkelling. Norfolk Island has only a few secluded sandy beaches tucked away at the base of high cliffs.

The on Norfolk Island consists, to varying degrees, of cliff faces. A downward slope exists towards Sydney Bay and Emily Bay, the site of the original colonial settlement of Kingston.

There are no safe harbour facilities on Norfolk Island, with loading jetties existing at Kingston and Cascade Bay. All goods not domestically produced are brought in by ship, usually to Cascade Bay.

The climate is subtropical and mild, with little seasonal differentiation. The island is the eroded remnant of a basaltic volcano active around 2.3 to 3 million years ago, with inland areas now consisting mainly of rolling plains. It forms the highest point on the Norfolk Ridge, part of the submerged continent Zealandia.

The area of the island is 3,455 hectares, with 32kms of coastline. Its formation is volcanic and it has some remote geological connection with New Zealand. In addition to the Main island, there are two smaller ones to the south, both are uninhabited. Nepean, 1 km away and the smaller, is a low islet of coral sandstone. Phillip, approximately 7km off, is volcanic and rises to 300 metres. The coastline of Norfolk consists mainly of imposing cliffs, fringed by the Famous Norfolk Island pine trees which form some magnificent scenery. The south side however, is comparatively low lying and it is here that the Golden beaches of the lagoon, sheltered by a coral reef are found.

Geological surveys have shown that the area surrounding Norfolk Island has all the earmarks indicating large natural gas and oil deposits. These as yet untapped resources, may, however, never contribute to the island, as Australia - 1,000 miles to the west - continues to lay claim to ownership of Norfolk Island's territorial waters and 200-mile economic zone.

I just would like to run into that water...

You have realized a simple, yet very pleasant picture. I like the deep point of view that leads us into the picture. The colors are wonderful, too. In combination with your very detailed and interesting notes looking at your posting ensures an entertaining and pleasant moment.

I love the way you have captured the subtle transition of colours from the warm gold sand through to the cooler blue in the distance. The horizon is nicely placed and I like the inclusion of the Norfolk Pines on the right which add interest to an otherwise reasonably flat area of land. A figure to one side in the foreground (gazing into the distance), or a small boat instead, would accentuate the depth between the foreground and the background.

What a nice and calm scenario you have posted here. So that is what the weather looks like at you place now - lucky you:-0). Here in little Denmark winter is closing up and preparing to rush over the country. We have had nights with temperature below zero a few times and the bedroom windows are now closed at night. Well, it does not matter because I love this time too. Soon we will have days with high clear and frosty sky with very good possibilities for in-flight shots of birds which I am looking forward to.

Lovely scenario with very nice colours, clever handling of the light and nice sharpness all over. I like the horizon high in the composition.

This is a delightful peaceful image, Janice!

I think the perspective is great, the gentle ripples over the sand in the FG to the breakers and the two headlands on the horizon in a fine composition. For me no artifact or person is necessary to accentuate the depth of this image.
This should be made into a large poster and set up in a hospital treating people suffering from stress!
