Macleay's Swallowtail
Graphium macleayanum
Macleay's Swallowtail is a beautiful species identified by the tails on its hind wings and the green colour on the undersides of its wings. It is commonly seen in urban areas from August to April. The caterpillars have adapted to feed on a variety of plants including the introduced Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora).
Its natural food source is the Southern Sassafras. Atherosperma moschatum. This is a slow-growing, dense, fire sensitive, narrow, conical tree to 30m high.It has velvety cream perfumed flowers during autumn and winter with nutmeg scented leaves when crushed. Leaves have distinctive serrated edges.The leaves are food for caterpillars of the MacLeay's Swallowtail butterfly, the only swallowtail butterfly in the cool temperate forests of south-eastern Australia.

Butterfy’s Distribution:
Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and north-eastern Tasmania.
Habitat:
Urban areas, forests and woodlands, heath.
Status:
Common
Size:
5.3-6.0 cm.
I must add that I observed a lot of antagonism towards this butterfly from the other ones that visit my garden. It was seldom left in peace and only stayed a very short time. It also kept moving its wings constantly, as if ready to take flight at any moment. I wondered if this was a typical Swallowtail habit?

Hello Klaudio,
Great capture of a Macleay's Swallowtail, a species that I would liked to have seen when we were in Austalia.
This is sharp and well composed on the buddleia flowers to show the underside of the butterfly well against a green bokeh BG.

Hello Klaudio,
Lovely capture of this beautiful Swallowtail endemic to Australia. I like the point of view showing sharp details and fantastic colours of the underside. I like its pose too even though it is a bit shy! Very fine plain background too.

A wonderfully clear picture, especially as you captured it at 1/160. Yes, it is a common flight characteristic of the Swallowtails (Papilionidae) to flutter constantly as they feed. You are only really likely to see them with the wings still when it is cool, most often early in the morning before the flight muscles have warmed up. Thanks.

A very interesting POV! I miss the head, but I like the colorful flowers as well. Beautiful colors overall and a fantastic BG. Your DOF could have been a little better tho - I might think f8 minimum for close-ups, unless you want to be create with parts that are OOF.

Hi Klaudio, you are the "featured artist" today on the TN homepage and this photo caught my eye. Beautiful colours and sharpness on the butterfly.

I think maybe I would prefer to see the flowers either as sharp as the butterfly, or else totally defocussed - but nonetheless a great shot.
