[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Koalas are not bears, but are herbivorous marsupials, with adults weighing approximately 9km.
Koalas are widespread in Australia, living in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria in habitats ranging from coastal islands to forests and low inland woodlands.
Koalas are fussy eaters. There are about 600 types of eucalypt trees in Australia, but koalas only eat the leaves from a small number of these. They consume between 200 and 500 grams of leaves per day.
Koalas very rarely drink water, and get the moisture they need from the leaves. The word 'koala' is a derivation of an aboriginal word meaning 'no drink'.
Koalas live in societies, and have a home range that they roam through.
This photo was taken at Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary while the koala was dozing in the warm afternoon sun. |
