[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Mountain Spotted Grasshopper (Monistria concinna) from the family Pyrgomorphidae. This species has eight races scattered through eastern and southern Australia. This is the Victorian alpine race and is only found above 1500m. They live in alpine herb fields, and subalpine heaths and woodlands.
Although most insects die when temperatures reach freezing (0șC) but the Spotted Mountain Grasshoppers spend the winter beneath the snow in all instars (growth stages) until they are adults. The Grasshoppers blood contains an anti-freeze type substance called Sorbitol which is believed to allow them to tolerate freezing conditions.
I found this one near Mt, Buffalo sitting of a yellow paper daisy (Xerochrysum bracteatum)
