The Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibcen) is one of most common and widespread birds in Australia. It is well distributed through most of the continent and inhabits any vegetated environment except the driest of the interior desert regions.
They are a large, often aggressive bird (45cm) and have an omnivorous diet, yet their sweet melodious song is one of the most enduring sounds of the Australian bush. They live in pairs and fiercely defend territories against other magpies and similar sized currawongs. Sometimes the male will tolerate subordinate females to help raising the young of which 2-4 are reared annually.
They are not related to the magpies of the northern hemisphere, their common name being a testament of early settlers naming birds that looked vaguely similar to the birds of Europe in particular.
The Magpie can become reasonably tame around towns and readily occupy parklands and larger urban backyards. This one was taken on a sunny winterís afternoon in a park at Berkeley and I was quite happy with the exposure.
Thanks for looking.

Bravo in French.

Hello Chris!
Very nice capture.POV,DOF,clear eyes and composition are perfect. Thanks for sharing.

This is a beauty, Chris.
I hate B/W birds, only for it's almost impossible to get the right exposure but you manage very well.
Well composed, nice POC and good details.
Excelent work.

Wow! Chris, European magpies are real hooligans, I bet Australian ones aren't polite also ;-) I love its proud pose and big beak. Superb details, black and white but not OE.

Hi Chris
Nice shot. The Magpie is something on my wish list. As I travel around the Sth Island of NZ I hope to get one. So far we have seen many but always in the wrong place. Still got 9 days to go so hopefully luck will be on my side.

You have managed the exposure on the B&W perfectly. Good OOF BG. Maybe a little soft on focus. Nice all the same. Thanks.

Chris, impressive and stunning.

To me, one of the greatest accomplishments in this photo is exposure. The bird has black and white shades; despite that, there is no over or underexposure at all. Congratulations. Besides, the light in the eye. Not to mention the perfect sharpness, pov, pose, composition and blurred background. Finally the contrasts - in the bird itself and in the bg.

A stunning portrait of this beautiful magpie. The black and white contrast is very striking. Very sharp focus and perfect exposure. You caught the iridescence on the black feathers. Well done and TFS. : )

Hi Chris,

Excellent shot and well done on the composition and details.
How close were you. The fuji pickup the bird well.

Hi Chris.. Excellent capture of this black and white bird! I happen to be partial to black and white animals as I have a border collie mix, and I know how hard it is to get the exposure correctly. You did a wonderful job! Exceptionally done! :-)

Superb shot Chris!
The quality of this photo is perfect. Great POV and composition, very good lighting.
It looks more like crow than our magpie, but the colours are very simillar.

Hi Chris, I have no time to write a decent comment. I give to you the well deserved smiley. A very beautifull bird.

Thank you for sharing pictures and notes and for the enjoyment which they give to me.

Hello Chris,
Great capture. Sharp details and great POV. Exposure is great.
I like the magpies and interesting to see this one, quite different than the one in Europe.
Only comment is the small yellow mark in the right hand side of the picture - I would clone it out.
TFS - Shir
