Welcome here to TN Ian. I like this composition. The sun killed some of your impact - You can try using some foil wrapped over some cardboard to make a reflective panel. You use it by reflecting the sun on the dark side of the fungi and then the contrasts will be better.

Hi Ian, welcome to TN.
You tryed with very difficult conditions when shooting this fungus. The high contrast of the sun made some washed out parts appear in you shot, while there are some parts too dark. Japie gave you a good trick to improve this shot with the reflective panel. Also getting a higher F value with fill flash work well in this cases.
