[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In a recent post by Felipe, he described a way of diffusing the flash brightness in close-up photography using the built-in flash of compact digital cameras. The technique is to simply place a handkerchief over the flash.
I found these beautiful bright yellow fungi at Macquarie Pass National Park on the south coast of New South Wales, one of my favourite local places. This park consists of rainforest and wet eucalypt forest and the light can be difficult. The fungi were growing in a heavily shaded glade, but a gap in the canopy behind the glade produced strong backlight and it was not possible to shoot the fungi from the other side. So I adopted the handkerchief technique over the flash and here is the result. I think it turned out OK, so thanks Felipe.
As I stated in my previous fungi post, there are around 20,000 macro fungi in Australia and only around 1/4 have been formally described.

Update (7/2/05). I had previously suggested this fungi could be the Yellow Agarics (Cyrtotrama asprata) but I was wrong. Fungiman (Clive Shirley)correctly pointed out that they are in fact (Leucocoprinus birnbaumii) a relatively common fungi with a seemingly global distribution. This fungi is also found occasionally in potting mix used for pot plants. The caps are around 4-5cm wide.

Good work with the Felipe tip Chris. This is a very informative post. good work

This is a great one, Chris. Superb photo quality. It's limpid, beautifully sharp and colored. Very good framing too. The light is so well displayed, and so naturally, that the cap textures really come out on the screen as if it was in 3D. A favorite!

Very god macro Chris.
Great colors, DOF, details and light.
It you have 20,000 macro fugis, you have some job to do, I'll wait for the rest.;-)
Very good work.

Three is a magic number. Fantastic trio Chris, the textures and pastel lemon colouring are superb. Very well composed and hte lighting is great too.

An excellent post. Just beautiful. I love the shape colour and composition you got here. I am also very happy my high-tech diffuse flash helped you with this beauties. A perfect use of a F:3.2, and POV with the small ones at the base.
And remember, several folds on paper, adjust levels... put some distance between the paper and the flash, the result is very different, better sometimes with middle distance macros.
I will post some more soon with this technique. TFP.

Great picture with very good colours and very interesting picture.

Fantastic mushrooms,
I have never seen them before,I like the colours a lot, the composition is very strong, and the light is fantastic, very good job

Hi Chris, Nice photo but I think you have the wrong name Cyrtotrama asprata is a small fungus that grows on wood and does not have a ring (annulus) on the stalk. I believe you have is Leucocoprinus birnbaumii. This fungus is often found growing in pot plants or gardens rich in organic material. It nice to see it in a more natural habitat. I think I might have cloned out the dirt on the caps

Beaufiful and it looks poisonous too, great exposre as well. You can use tissue paoer too as a diffuser, or even use it it get some extralight onto the subject - just make sure it is not in the frame.
Thanks for the humour with the secretary, I had a quiet chucle about the cobra.

Nice composition and colours. Sharpness and DOF is good as well.

Very nice colors and composition Chris. That yellow trio really stands out.

No brasil eu também tirei uma foto disso. Interessante coincidência!
In the brasil I also took a picture of that. Interesting coincidence!

What a great shot ! Amazing details, contrasts and especially colours. Great job.
Toni

Very colorful, and technically superb. Was the aperture really f/3.2, or f/32 to get such depth of field in a macro? Very sharp - the little insects (midges?) add a sense of size to the fungus itself.

Lovely shot Chris and a very useful note. I have been trying to shoot lots of various fungi recently so will pack a hankerchief and give this technique a go.
The texture of the fungi captured in this shot is wonderful. Thanks for posting this.

Hi Chris, I just keep finding gems on this site. Great image and very useful note, well done. The fungi stand out so well from the litter. Will be looking for more. Regards, Rob.

Hi Chris,
How could I miss this picture before?
It is absolutely wonderful!
No need to add words - a favorite.

Very nice macro, Chris. Wonderful control of the depth of field. Colors of the fungi are exciting. Well done.

Excellent close-up Chris!
Focus and exposure couldn't be better. Artistically, the composition is well balanced. But best of all is the soft light and the colors contrast. The fungi really stand out of the picture. TFS

I was out of points yesterday, so here is your score

Another magnificent photography with which you delight to us. Excellent details and colors. And like always very useful your notes.

Hello Chris,

Hello Chris.

Excellent picture, nice composition and colors.
Great composition.

Hi Chris,

The reason of choosing this old post of You for today is now, when Steve (LordPotty) is in an inactive period I miss fungi pics from Your region.

This is an exceptional photo of the tropical specie Leucocoprinus birnbaumii (Clive was right), which lives in Europe only in glass-houses. Local literature says it was already found a few times in my home country, too. Fantastic details, cap texture, colors and sharpness. Very clever use of flash. A real stunner image. Bravo. A favorite for me, too.

20.000 macro fungi in Oz... Although Hungary's much, much smaller, something like Tasmania state or a bit bigger, we have ca. 3.000 only. I hope to find this specie once, in a glass-house, but the chance is very small.

Best wishes, László
