[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is my contribution to the “Near Miss” theme that Callie suggested. I chased this Copper-tailed Skink around for some 35 minutes and got around ten profile shots. But I like to shoot my lizards so they look like their doing something. I positioned myself in front of his burrow and waited for him to return. Everything went well (or so I thought), I was prone on the ground, he came up over the small rise and snap, snap, snap – three shots in the bag, then he was off down his hole. I sat up and looked at the shots on the LCD screen, yep they looked good to me, and off I went, happy with the shoot.
When I got home and loaded them onto the computer, the flaws became obvious; the shots were slightly overexposed, the DOF was too shallow and there was a stupid stick in front of his face. Oh well, its better than what I had on print and slide, so it will do for now. I hope you get a laugh out of it.

The Copper-tailed Skink (Ctenotus taeniolatus) is a relatively common skink of eastern Australia, around 200mm total length. It is confined to woodlands associated with sandstone and granite outcrops, but in these areas it can be numerous. Like most skinks, they are very skittish and they are favourite prey of Kookaburras, Butcherbirds and Sacred Kingfishers. They generally live in crevices under rocks but sometimes dig a shallow burrow or use a hollow tree limb as home.

Cropped, levels adjusted, 50% USM, dodge tool on bright points and resized for TN.

The things we do to get a pic! It's not all plane sailing is it? and as you have said you think you got a good image in the bag only to be brought right back to reality, you gotta work for your great pics. :o)

Well done even for a near miss. Your exposure is right and the composition is well done.

The shallow DOF is'nt distracting but the stick and the hot spots are very distracting to my eye.

I like this lizard shot. I tried to shoot some myself, know how they can let you run around. This is good, closer to a "near miss" than a "near hit".

Chris, Let me tell you, that "stupid stick" will get you every time!! ;-)) Enjoyed your notes on the capture.. It's a great lookin' lizard & a nice additon to the near-missed theme.. TFS!

Very nice note, I had a very good time with it and your photo. What you say is very common also in macro shots, everything looks fantastic on the display and then at home is rubbish. Also the other way round, some shots you take with not much interest, come out to be fantastic :D
In this shot although you missed very little you are right it is quite disturbing. Thanks for posting.

Man, what you call "Near miss" would be "great pic" for me. ;) I do understand you were pissed of by the stick. ;)

It's a nice contribution to the theme Chris. Very interesting subject. I did some recontructive surgery in a WS. Hope you find it usefull.

Skinks are preys of my cat too. This is a pretty coloured skink Chris. Your near miss isn't too bad at all, considering how fast they can move. TFS.

Chris, I know well the experience you have been through. I myself learned we cannot trust the LCD monitor.

I don't think you shot is a bad one. Besides, the reptile is very beautiful, and composition is nice.
