Southern White Rhinoceros
Ceratotherium simum simum
Also Called: Square-lipped rhinoceros

This fellow resting on his wrinkled chin is the Southern White Rhinoceros at the Auckland Zoo , New Zealand. Next to the elephant, the white rhino is the largest land mammal. The white rhino is the largest of 5 rhino species.

Auckland Zoo is part of the Australasian white rhino captive breeding programme. They currently have two white male rhinos. Mandla, the largest of our two males (he weighs just over 2 tonne!) was captive-born at San Diego Zoo in 1979, and came to Auckland Zoo in 1980. The other male Kruger was born in 1989 at Kruger National Park, and arrived in late 1999.

In the wild male rhino are solitary so itís appropriate that Mandla and Kruger are never put together. They take turns going out separately in the rhino paddock in Pridelands. This works very successfully.

Hello Janice!

Looks rather tired. I like this scene and very high quality. Perfect details on rhino's skin. Nice, natral colours. Very well done.

It's snowing now!!!

Hi Janice!

I have made the mistake to look at this picture at work. Now, I just feel like having a nap like this rhinoceros...

Many thanks for this magnificent picture. The rhino is cute - as far as this is the appropriate adjective for such an impressive animal. I like its pose and the expression that emanates from the whole picture. Moreover, the details shown by the great sharpness are superb.

Kind regards

Hi Janice,
I hope you are doing well.
A nice picture of this resting Rhinos.
The details are really good and the POV is low and fine.
Well done, old friend.

We still have winter with lots of the white stuff but the spring is round the corner and some birds have return, I took some picture a Whoppers today.

Hi Janice,
A nice portrait of this beautiful rhino. Excellent sharp details and a lovely composition. Very good capture. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Janice.
Very attractive framing of the scene. I like it a lot. I also am impressed with great quality of the image. You managed to reflect even tiny details of fine animal and surroundings. DOF and sharpness are amazing as well as lights, exposure and color reproduction. Well done and my kind regards.

Siemanko Janice.
Topping photo sleeping rhinoceros. Shows all details very well .
I salute and I wish nice weekend.

This is a very interesting capture of this big guy. Your lighting shows off the texture of his skin very nicely. The picture is very crisp and sharp.

Thanks for sharing this picture.

This rhino sure looks tired! Wonderful and close-up photo - I hope you took the photo from a safe distance. I have seen those animals in South Africa, from an open jeep, with armed drivers, but I was scared, not for me but for my youngest son, who travelled with me. Safer to see them at zoo!
The white rhinos are not endangered, but the so called black ones, who live in Tanzania and Kenya, are very few. They have tried to take white rhinos to those countries, but the nature is so different from the South African, so it did not succeed.

Hi Janice,
This is so... cute... I guess.... : )
It is strange to see this huge and formidable animal... in such a cuddly, vulnerable pose.
The focus is so sharp, showing off the texture of the thick skin.
The exposure is perfect as well. An excellent composition.
TFS. : )
