The Maori People and Shags

Maori considered the shag to be the offspring of one of their gods.

Shags were noted for their straight, unswerving flight and there are many sayings referring to this. They were not an important food supply but were occasionally eaten.

Shaggeries in trees or on cliffs were visited to take the young before they could fly. These shaggeries were known by special names and were often given as evidence of occupation in the Land Court.

In Māori sayings, someone obviously poised /ready to leave, is compared to a shag (kawau) ready for flight: ‘Ka maro te kaki o te kawau’ (the shag’s neck is stretched out).

People on a determined course of action are ‘me kawau ka tuku ki roto i te aro maunga’ (like a shag making for a mountain face).

Shags also symbolise tenacity / stubbornness: ‘E kore te kawau e neke i tona tumu tu’ (the shag will not move from his stump).

The dejected air of a sitting shag gave rise to the Kiwi phrase, ‘as miserable as a shag on a rock’.

Check out here. This is the pond where we found the shag.

Hi Janice!

Excellent post, full of interesting Maori proverbs! I didn't know that Shags are so important for Maori people. We've got many shags/cormorants in Poland, but they're not very popular in Polish language or traditions. Strange. Definitelly Eagle and Stork are rulers :-) Photo is very good, close portrait and perfect eye with your silhouette in it. Superb work my friend!

Hi Janice

This is another great portrait from you!
The sharpness of the detailsand textures is impressive here and the colors look great!
Also the pose of this shag is excellent and the shallow DOF managed very well to focus all the attnetion on it and not have anything else distracting in the frame.
Nice lighting and composition, too!
Bravo and TFS

Hello Janice,
This is a very good portrait of this bird that I find so funny! It is very close with excellent details, POV, colors and composition. There is just a lack in details at the end of its beak but this is really minor ;-) Its eye is just amazing and those colors are very well saturated. Well done!
Claudine

Hello Janice,
I like the detail of the eye and base of the bill in this shag portrait and the BG is great.
Of course if the light allowed it you would have reduced the aperture to get a sharp tip of the bill. But we know that the nice thing about nature photography is that we have to make the most of what is avaliable and you did just that.
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Hello Janice!
Great this close up of the shag.
Plenty of details, the skin around the beak takes it all my atention.
Nice feather texture also.
The DOF makes a perfect background to enjoy the bird.
Congratulations and thanks for share,
JM
