[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
BLECHNUM NOVAE-ZEALANDIAE formerly called BLENCHNUM CAPENSE
Maori name: Kiokio Kee-oh-kee-oh
Other names: Gully Fern. Water Fern. Palm-leaf Fern.

One of three species formerly know as Blechnum Capense, this is now known as Blechnum Novae-Zealandiae.

It is one of the most widely distributed species of ferns in New Zealand growing abundantly on clay banks along roadsides and rivers. The long cascading fronds (up to 2m long and 50cm wide) are a bright pink colour when new, then turn a bright reddish colour, before going to light green and then darker green as they mature.

Blechnum - Kiokio are often seen on roadsides, stream edges, and in scrub and swamps, as well as alongside tracks in the bush. In fact, it is almost like a weed in some areas.

This Blenchum is now aging you can see the brown marks appearing all over the fronds. I find this quite an attractive fern.

Hi Janice.
A nice composition of it coming down through the frame and great detail showing the aging of the fern. Just a little bit of harsh light on the front of the frond but still good detail of how ragged they get.

Kia Ora Janice,

It is no sickness of that plant. The brown marks gives the photo a artistic composition. Sharp as usually. Just what Kathleen said:"just a little bit of harsh light on the front" But I like that photo. Very nice. Regards and TFS Bob

Hello Janice,
Wow! What a nice plant that I think I see for the first time. This is a very detailed and beautiful composition with superb colors and interesting notes. I like to see this vegetation you have down there; it is so exotic to me ;) Thanks,
Claudine
