California Quail (Callipepla californica)

The California quail was first imported into the Nelson district in 1865 and during the folowing ten years into the Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, Southland and Wellington districts.

The California quail is a beautiful creature. The male has a scaled belly, black chin, and a big, black topknot sticking out of the top of his head.

Perched on a tree or a fence post, the male California Quail claims his territory by cackling and posturing. The entire family takes to trees for roosting as well as for safety. After the breeding season, these birds become gregarious, gathering in large coveys and often visiting city parks, gardens, and yards. This is the quail with the "topknot" featured in the animated films of Walt Disney.

Description: 9-11" (23-28 cm). A stocky, mainly gray quail with a curved black head plume. Similar to Gambel's Quail, but crown brown, not chestnut; forehead buff, not black; and belly scaled, lacking black patch in center. Female less boldly marked than male.

The above obtained from various websites.

Hello Pam,

You have made an excelent portret of this well looking bird. The image is extremly sharp so that the pattern of the plumage can be very well observed. As you have chosen an excelent POV you have had good eye contact with the bird. You have made good use of the flash getting nice saturated and naturaly looking colors.

Thank you for sharing and i wish you a Happy New Year,

Hi Pam,

Hi Pam

Nice yo see you back here...i hope you are well :)
This is a lovely photo of California Quail...it's such a funny looking bird with that...thing...on its head! :)) Well if Elvis is dead, he's reincarnated in this bird here :))

Seriously now, the photo is excellent and the fact that we can see it from this funny angle is all your merit. Further more, the quail is impeccably sharp and also well lit, thanks to your great fill-in flash work.
Great shot is all aspects and nice presentation, too.

Bravo, TFS and Happy New Year
