Koru - Unfurling Fern Frond

The koru is the Māori name given to the newborn, unfurling fern frond and symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori carving and tattoos.

Koru can also refer to bone carvings. Those generally take the shape of the uncurling fern plant. When bone is worn on the skin, it changes colour as oil is absorbed. The Māori took this to symbolise that the spirit of the person was inhabiting the pendant. When someone gives a pendant to someone else, it is the custom that they wear it for a time so that part of their spirit is given as well.

The koru is used in a stylised form as the logo of Air New Zealand and as an iconic symbol of New Zealand flora.

You capture and edit these curious natural shapes with the meticulousness of an artist craftsperson, Pam.
This one is a sheer work of art.
Did I tell you that certain varieties of the fern at this curly stage are eaten as vegetable or pickled in certain mountain zones in India and Nepal?
Thanks for sharing it.
Ram

Hello Pam,
Is it for Janice ;-) It is pleasant to admire this natural shape. Because of the great sharpness and DOF the fern stands out from the blurred background. Exposure and warm colors are super. And as always the smart frame around matches well.
Congratulations and TFS.

Hello Pam,
This is a GREAT macro, wow! Those details are soooo sharp. Very nice POV, composition, DOF; perfect picture. Your notes are very interesting too. TFS,

Nice image Pam with beautiful details starting from an excellent sharpness, good illumination and appropriate DOF and point of view.
I like the elected framing and the out of focus achieved on the bottom.

Hello Pam

A beautiful close up of this fern plant. Here in Canada we refer to them as "fiddleheads", and some are edible and quite good.Always a sign of the emerging springtime.A very good POV and DOF.The details are razor sharp. The colour saturation is spot on.A beautiful composition ,with a lovely frame.TFS

Rob

Hello Pam
Square composition shows off the Koru to its best advantage. Absolutely spectacular detail and well set off from background. Color tones in subject and BG are highly complementary. Well done. Regards.
Greg

Great one!

Hello Pam!

Maybe not cute bird, but also superb shot. I love symmetry and geometry of young Koru. Details are great, every single hair is well visible. Composition and blurred BG are also very good. Piece of art.

Hi Pam,

This is an impressive picture. The composition is reall nice. Sharpness is spot on and l like the way the Koru stands out against the background,
Well done
