Green Vegetable bug

Family:Pentatomidae

These green vegetable bugs,also known as Shield Bugs or Stink Bugs arrived in New Zealand from Europe before 1944 and are now common throughout the country.
They are well known,and loathed,as a garden pest,sucking the sap of many summer vegetables.
It is readily distinguished from the native New Zealand Vegetable Bug which is very shiny all over.

Sometimes these vegetable bugs are confused with other shield bugs which are carnivorous and can be quite beneficial in the garden,preying on other pests.
One example is the Schellenberg Soldier Bug,which is a brown sheild bug,with pointed shoulders,which preys on the destructive Eucalyptus Tortoise Beetle.
Another is the Brown Soldier Bug,which mostly sucks the juice out of caterpillars.

Nice macro. Although this image would be better to TrekLens with desaturating the leaf to a duotone b/w, because the green is simply too much on the photo, and the insect doesn't get enough attention from the viewer. Best regards, László

Well hidden on there, being a stink-bug you would not want to accidently cut him up in the cabbage leaves for dinner.

Hi Steve, some names for bugs may be logical but not very inspired are they? :-) Nice shot, good looking little bug. You did well coping with the very reflective leaf. Well done.
