Two Spined Spider
(Poecilopachys australasiae)
This is probably the most bizzarre loooking spider in New Zealand,but does not originate here.
It is believed to have arrived from Australia some time in the 1970s and is now well established through warmer areas of the North Island.
It is a small spider,less than a centimetre across,and only the female has the distinctive spines on her back.
It can often be found on citrus trees during the daytime,usually hiding on the underside of leaves.
At night it emerges to spin a cartwheel shaped web in which it catches and devours insects many times its own size.
At daybreak it devours the web again and goes into hiding under a leaf.

Nice macro on this very unique looking spider. A tiny little one for sure. Colors and detail look very good. Good supporting notes. Very interesting. Nice shot!

Hello Steve,
A capture of a Two-spined Spider that deserves more attention. Technically a great macro, especially from this 2-pix camera, taken from a fine POV to show us most of the features.
