The parea, or Chatham Island pigeon - Hemiphaga chathamensis - is one of the world's heaviest and rarest pigeons. Until recently it was considered to be a subspecies of the kereru, or New Zealand pigeon - Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae - but now has full species status. The parea differs from it's NZ cousin by being up to a fifth heavier, having its dosal & upper breast plumage more purple/pearl-grey, and by having a distinctive yellow tip to the beak. In 1990 just 40 of these birds remained on Chatham Island but after a research programme, habitat protection and predator control, the numbers have steadily increased to about 600 today, almost all found on the southern part of Chatham Island. The parea often feeds on the ground, even on clover-pasture farmland which is a feature not found on the NZ bird. |
