[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A portrait of a South Island kaka - Nestor meridionalis meridionalis - on Stewart Island. The kaka is the forest parrot of New Zealand and has been in decline since European settlement, mainly through the predation of its young by stoats, which were introduced to both the North & South Islands to control rabbits - also introduced. Fortunately stoats where not introduced to Stewart Island so the kaka do well, frequently appearing in the Half Moon Bay settlement looking for berries & other food. Many of the inhabitants put out little troughs of sweetened water which the birds love.
