I caught the Trans-Alpine railway from Chritchurch on the east coast to Greymouth on the west coast. It’s regarded as one of the great railway journeys and I can tell you it was absolutely awesome. Briefly you travel west across the broad Canterbury plain, then you ascend the mountains cross rivers cross over the top of the alps at Arthurs Pass, go through an 8km tunnel, descend through rainforest covered slopes to the narrow west coast plain and finally arrive at Greymouth. It’s a four hour trip, but the scenery is great and there are several stops that allow you to get off and stretch your legs.
This is the view from Springfield station, a small station that services the surrounding farming community. There was a dusting of snow of the southern alps; I think you’ll agree it is very picturesque.

Hello Chris, good detail seen in this shot of the Southern Alps. Lighting is good providing very good colour and great colour contrasts seen between the mountains and that sky. You have good sharp detail giving good definition in those peaks. Sounds like an interesting trip.

Thanks, John

Hallo Chris
What a relaxing scene from your lens. It is really spectacular and there are such a lot of details and colours and elements to appreciate. The blue-green mountains in the far distance, the clear blue sky and the different shapes and sizes trees in the middle of your image. Looking at all of this makes me want to shout out: "I want to be there" I think it would be just great walking through that green fields, looking up to the sky and once again appreciate the wonder of the Creation. A tranquil landscape with super framing, composition and depth of field all in one. I am still learining about the 3rd ruling in photography and I am sure this one pass with flying colours in that categorie. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.

A nicely composed landscape with good colour and nicely defined contours in the mountains. You'll have to come back in the winter and see them when they are blanketed in snow... even more spectacular! The TranzAlpine trip in the winter is also an awesome journey. I haven't done the trip in about 18 years but I still remember it vividly.

Hi Chris,
Very picturesque, but very different from the mountains I see here. I've heard about this railway line, used to say that's the nicest on Earth.
Great panorama with nice colors. Simple yet very-very effective. Big congratulations, my Friend.
Best regards, László

Hello Chris,

Hello Chris,
Yo're lucky you're so 'close' to New Zealand -it must be a wonderful place. Excellent capture showing this beautiful mountain range that suddenly seems to end the plain. Excellent DOF and sharpness and beautiful colours. Well done!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Chris,
I'm a little late with this picture. I had seen it and wanted to leave some comment, but didn't do it until now. It's really a super landcape picture for which you have chosen the ideal framing. Really great scenery. New Zealand is a country which makes me dream ..I hope I can visit it one day
Best regards
Anne
