White-fronted Tern

We went out on a cruise on Akaroa Harbour in Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand, and as we went out of the heads we came across this rock literally covered in theses White-fronted Terns.

These terns are the most common tern in New Zealand. We don’t usually see many of them flying around home up in Auckland, but down here there were many. As you can see they were all over the rock and mainly facing into the wind. They can’t have been nesting there because it was autumn – and the wrong season.

The photo isn’t too clear – remember I was on a moving boat, there were waves, and the birds were flying too. Just as well I'd taken my sea-sick tablet!!

There is a closer look at them as a workshop. Can you see odd bird out?

They feed in large flocks on small fish by plunge diving. Shoals of small fish and pilchards which have been driven to the surface by larger fish are easily caught by the terns, which also scoop up the surface-shoaling fish as well.

Hi Janice,

Very nice capture of these White-fronted Terns. I can imagine the noise of the sea and the birds. Good composition and DOF, nice colours and sharp details.

You know I love the ocean, miss it very much..Since we're almost 400 miles away, rarely get there..I think it's been a few years.
Anyway, thanx for this wiff of ocean air this morning..if only in my mind :)

You remind me of living on the California coast...can you imagine oil rigs off shore there Janice? would be unthinkable right? Ahh perhaps you have not heard our fine President has suggested we drill...I hate that word...drill...it would ruin lovely spots such as this!

Hello Janice,
Though the waves made a sharp photo difficult you made a pretty clear capture of this wave- battered rock alive with White-fronted Terns.
They are well seen against the dark cliff BG and th composition is pleasing. Must be an exciting place to visit.

Was there not a loud noise of those birds? Thats special an ordinary seagull between the terns. you did a nice job on a moving boat. Nice compo. POV, DOF and BG are good.

Places like that are truly a photographer's heaven! Although getting close to the rock might be dangerous, I am sure being in the area can provide ample picture opportunities. Your picture shows this environment very nicely. I wouldn't worry about the sharpness at all here. This picture depicts the surroundings very well. Great job. TFS.
