Silver Gull

The Silver Gull has a white head, tail and underparts, with a light grey back and black-tipped wings. In adult birds the bill, legs and eye-ring are bright orange-red. This colouration and its relatively small size (40 - 45 cm) easily distinguish it from the other two resident gulls in Australia. These are the Pacific Gull, L. pacificus (63 cm), and the Kelp Gull,

As with many other gull species, the Silver Gull has become a successful scavenger, readily pestering humans for handouts of scraps, pilfering from unattended food containers or searching for human refuse at tips. Other food includes worms, fish, insects and crustaceans., With increased access to a wide-range of dietary items, the Silver Gull has been able to increase its population in areas of human activity. Available nesting grounds appear to be the only limiting factor to population increases.

Breeding may take place at any time, but usually occurs between August and November. Birds nest in large colonies on offshore islands. Often two broods will be raised in a year, and both adults share nest-building, incubation and feeding duties. Usually three eggs are laid in a shallow nest scrape, lined with vegetation.

Hello Jane,
An excellent portrait of Silver Gull
showing the head from a fine side POV with superb sharpness and lighting. The dark OOF natural BG is a fine contrast.

Hi Jane.
First-class shot of the beauty. All is perfect. May be framing on the bottom of the shot is strong a little nit. Very attractive POV and pose of the bird. I also like precise reproduction of the bird's feathers and other charming details. Well detailed and a bit blurred BG is looked greatly against the crisp sharp image of the gull. Exposure is also spot on. My kind regards and compliments.
Alexei.

Hi Jane.
Nice composition from this Silver Gull.
Good of dof and details.
Maybe a little more space beneath his legs it looks now if there are a littlle cut off.
Beautiful natural colours and exellent sharpness.

Hi Jane,

Really appreciate the feedback and sorry to her you didn’t even get to see a Kookaburra :( I have plenty in the back garden eating me out of house and home ;)

Great POV showing the whole body, excellent detail in the plumage, wonderful colours, really nice work.

Cheers Rick :)

Witaj Jane
Very pretty composition. It shows that sea-gulls do not fear city, men and out. Beautiful aves, sharp. To be visible all details nicely. It gives back the colours of feathers perfectly.

Hi Jane
Excelelnt capture.Good POV and very sharp image, great colors to.I've been practicing on them for the past few day ,I beleive they are a good subject to practice in flight picture and to also practice getting shrp plumage detail from the white feather. You did very good on that detail comment.

Hello Jane,
I missed several of your shots while I was away and this struck me not only because it is a fine capture of a Silver Gull, but because it evokes fine memories of it during our visit to Australia.
The pose abd POV are perfect and taken with fine sharpness and lighting against the OOF urban BG.
Nice one and TFS!
Cheers,
Ivan

I seem to have missed out on this superb shot of yours, Sis.

Hi Jane,

Very good shot on this Silver Gull. A spot on exposure and good detail the plumage. I love the framing and composition with what is shown in the background. Since they live so well in close contact with humans, It is normal to see them in urban areas. Well done!
