Lake Wanaka: Paradise found!

Lake Wanaka lies in a glacial lake basin oriented approximately north and south and situated 20 miles east of the main divide at Mount Aspiring and 20 miles south-south-west of Haast Pass. The township of Wanaka at its southern end is 35 miles north by road from Cromwell and 54 miles south by road from Haast Pass. The name Wanaka is a corruption of Oanaka, which means “place of Anaka”, Anaka being the name of an early Maori chief of this district. The lake is 27 miles long and though its northern part is walled in by ranges up to 6,000 ft high, the southern end spreads out into more subdued country, where the shore line is deeply indented by bays, the most prominent being Glendhu Bay on the west and Stevensons Arm on the east. The lake stands 928 ft above sea level and is probably more than 1,000 ft deep.

The early Lake Wanaka was formed during the retreat of the ice terminal northwards from this loop about 10,000 years ago. It stood at first at a much higher level than at present. The outlet became entrenched in the glacial silts forming part of this moraine, and water level sunk in post-glacial time to its present 928 ft above sea level.

hello Pam

beautiful view+ outstanding

congratulations

jjo

I like the calmness in this picture showing the ripple effect on the bottom of the lake. It makes for an excellent foreground.

there is a remoteness about this picture that leaves me longing for the outdoor and not stuck inside at work. The air looks so clear and the sky and mountains are spot on.

In other words, you have acheived what you were after and have shown the area really well!

Do you have the pictures of either side of this one - it woudl make a wonderful panorama.

Emma

Hi Pam

What a lovely serene shot of a beautiful place, the detail and colours are lovely, the reflection is superb, at first I thought the reflected snow was a wave breaking.

Hi Pam,
this is a great view. It's really nice to sea snow from your part of the world. The compostion is very good and the deep in good too. Lovely colours and the water is very clear.
The reflecion is a big extra bonus.
Great work, my friend.

Hi Pam
Really Really great image. This one makes me want to visit your part of the world. The whole picture, sky, mountains, snow and water are beautiful. Wish I could wade out and remove that one rock that interruped your reflection. (Bet the rock was bigger than me!)
Thanks...Kathy

Hi Pam

Beautiful landscape shot. Sharp all the way. Great colors and perfect reflections. The sand on the sea bottom is makes a great FG and the mountains with snowtops makes a very nice BG. Great capture.

Hi Pam,
What a very stunning photo. The depth in this shot is just amazing. Colors and light are outstanding and all topped of with a breathtaking reflection. I really like the patches of clouds hanging half way up the first mountain.

Lovely reflection and colours. Great textures in the foreground

Fantastic scenery Pam, very nice to have that mirrored reflection in the water. If possible I would have tried to get down close to that rippled sandbed to make the foreground even stronger. Very well done.

Merci.

Seriously wonderful landscape, well photographed indeed!

Hello Pam,
There is an interesting effect since the shallow water is clear and see-through while the deeper parts provide an excellent mirror!
A beautiful composition of an impressive mountain range, decorated by fresh snow...
Greetings,
Pablo -
