It was drizzling, cold and the light was poor as I walked along the nature walk at Arthurs Pass, busily watching the ground and trying to stay out of the mud. I turned a bend in the track and heard a creak. I looked up and ‘oh my goodness, its an Ent’.

(For those who don’t know Ents were the humanoid tree creatures from “Lord of the Rings”.)

I decided I’d drunk too much wine the night before and headed back to the car.

Days later, when I was processing my shots at home, I thought wait a minute, there’s two arms, an eye, nose and mouth and down below, are they feet?.

OK, so I have an imagination, sorry (lol). This is of course a Mountain Beech (Northofagus solandri) ,one of the dominant trees at this altitude (around 950m) in Arthurs Pass National Park. It’s a beautiful forested area, with everything covered in mosses and lichens. There are plenty of tress like this one that you could easily tern in Ents, its no wonder they chose to shoot “Lord of the Rings” here, it’s very spooky!!!

Thanks for looking

Hi Chris
I like the dense light of the deep forest here.
and it looks like an ent tree, yes..
I like most the light and the greens on the "ent" tree...

well done.

Hi Chris.
Really magic place it must be- who knows, maybe after sunset they came to live;), very similar forests covered with moss I've seen in Scotland's Highland- looks really spooky, something like BlairWitch...
nice forest photograph, very natural.
TFS, cheers!
Adrian

Hi Chris,

I also do like this type of forest photos very much, most of all if they are captured so well as this one. Perfect documentation of a subtropical Nothofagus forest, which differs so much from our woods!

Let me show You the "almost-brother" of Nothofagus, our Fagus sylvatica. Interesting difference.

Tfs, regards, László

Hi,

On the road now and just marking now, will be back later...

That forest looks enchanted.I can imagine it would be a spooky place on a foggy night.

This does look like a wet bush, especially with all that moss growing on the trees and ground.
Ents - yes, maybe this is one - I can see the arms raised up high.
Good find Chris
