Hi Folks

This is my 800th post and to celebrate this event I thought I would share with you this interesting image of a Cormorant (Shag) that decided to bring ashore the eel he had caught. The problem being that the grass had been mowed beside the pond and as the Cormorant subdued his catch so he could eat it, the eel become covered in the mowed grass. It took the Cormorant a fair amount of time to clear it's beak of the grass, but he wasn't any the worse off for the experience. Thanks for looking.

Cormorants and shags are medium-to-large seabirds. The majority, including all Northern Hemisphere species, have mainly dark plumage, but some Southern Hemisphere species are black and white, and a few (e.g. the Spotted Shag of New Zealand) are quite colourful. Many species have areas of coloured skin on the face (the lores and the gular skin) which can be bright blue, orange, red or yellow, typically becoming more brightly coloured in the breeding season. The bill is long, thin, and sharply hooked. Their feet are four-toed and webbed, a distinguishing feature among the Pelecaniformes order.

They are coastal rather than oceanic birds, and some have colonised inland waters. They range around the world, except for the central Pacific islands.

All are fish-eaters, dining on small eels, fish, and even water snakes. They dive from the surface, though many species make a characteristic half-jump as they dive, presumably to give themselves a more streamlined entry into the water. Under water they propel themselves with their feet. Some cormorant species have been found, using depth gauges, to dive to depths of as much as 45 metres.

After fishing, cormorants go ashore, and are frequently seen holding their wings out in the sun; it is assumed that this is to dry them. Unusually for a water bird, their feathers are not waterproofed. This may help them dive quickly, since their feathers do not retain air bubbles.

Cormorants are colonial nesters, using trees, rocky islets, or cliffs. The eggs are a chalky-blue colour. There is usually one brood a year. The young are fed through regurgitation. They typically have deep, ungainly bills which make it obvious that they are related to pelicans.

Hi Pam

Frankly I feel like this cormorant looks, with a mouth full of chaff and getting tired of congratulating you each time with every next 100 postings. It seems like you are reeling them in at the speed of white light (chuckle). No, jokes aside, you are truly the king of postings (sorry, the queen…aaagh, you know what I mean). No question or miss understanding here about dedication and commitment. Another big C O N G R A T U L A T I O N.

This is a great "after action - zero satisfaction" shot. Heck, how would anyone feel after downing a slippery, slimy, and wriggling eel which left you with nothing else but a beak full of grass and dirt? Have you considered the outside possibility that the bird perhaps wanted to eat the grass on purpose to get rid of the taste of the eel? A clear, brilliantly sharp posting with stunning colours, superb BG, and excellent exposure that are all attributes of this technically perfect shot. And yes, a smashing composition as well.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Very rich and clean image Pam, the lighting makes this picture absolutely beautiful. Congratulation on your fantastic 800th. Wouldn't that be great if we could live to be that old too, although we would look like Shar Peis with wrinkles galore. :)

Hi Pam,
Top shot with top lighting. LOve the compo. Congrats on 800 posts.
Cheers

What an impressive accomplishment and what an accomplished portfolio. We have definitely enjoyed and learned from your beautiful images.
You have certainly chosen a great shot for this momentous occasion. You have captured the bewildered expression on this cormorant very well. What is one to do with all that grass on one's dinner?

Hi Pam and a big congrats to your impressive number of posts!
To many more!!!

This is again a fantastic shot and a magnificent portrait.
The details here are outstandingly sharp and clear and the shallow DOF choice here made a splendid blurry and contrasting BG behind this charming cormorant.
Even the grass is in great focus here :))
The colors are fantastic, too, very nicely saturated and exposed.
A splendid composition!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Pam:
Congratulations on your 800th post, and not only the 800th, but a great image as well! Its been amazing to watch you refine your technique from your early shots to the superb images you grace this site with. All the best, Alan

Great subject and wonderful timing for this capture, Pam. A bit daring to have framed this so tight, I'd say, but what wonderful results. Amazing control of the exposure here, I think shooting in raw gave you a bit of latitude, but a perfect job in the PP to get that exposure.
Mike
P.S. Congrats on #800. But just think of how many exposures it must have taken to get to 800 postings. If you're like me I keep less than 1/10th of those I shoot, and probably post 1/100 of those. So that's about a million exposures!
