Common Name Common Blue Morpho
Morpho peleides
Lepidoptera: Morphidae
Range: Mexico to Venezuela, Trinidad

At Butterfly Creek again.

Morpho butterflies are prized by butterfly collectors, due to the bright iridescent blue colour of the wings on most species. In contrast, the underside is dark brown, providing some camouflage for a resting individual. In addition, there is a row of eyespots on the underside that are useful in startling would-be predators. The blue colour comes, not from a pigment, but from iridescence--the reflection and refraction of light through prism-like, portions of the scales.

Morpho peleides is known as the Common blue morpho and is found from Mexico through northern South America. Its strikingly blue upperside is breath-taking in flight. It eats fermenting fruits instead of nectaring flowers. It has a strong scent gland between it’s forelegs to deter predators.

The Morpho tends to close its' wings when it lands and I didn’t recognize it while it is standing still. I was confused at first as I could see this beautiful blue butterfly flying around and then landing, and all I could see were the brown wings, with no bit of blue showing at all. So different, just like Jekyll and Hyde.

Hi Janice! You are getting very good at this! Too bad about the noise in the BG, but otherwise very good. Great colors and details, well done on the POV and composition. TFS!

Bonita mariposa, buena composicion, solo le falta un poco de nitidez, well done.

I don't know how you got all these shots Janice.Do the butterflies there just sit still all day?
