Northland Green Gecko

Description:
The colour of the dorsal surface is vivid green and often displaying grey or gold coloured markings on either side along the dorsal edges. The males have a blue band along the sides just below the limbs. The ventral surface of both sexes is bright pale green, sometimes with a yellow tinge. The inside of the mouth is deep blue with a bright red tongue. Total length < 200mm and SVL would be 95mm.

Distribution:
Found in the far north of the North Island, from Whangaroa to Cape Reinga.

Ecology:
Diurnal habit, often found sun-basking. The young are born in autumn, although in captivity births have been recorded much later in the year.

Habitat:
Arboreal, most commonly found in stands of manuka, kanuka and mingimingi

(Information from the website of the New Zealand Herpetological Society)

I believe this particular gecko was a pregnant female.
All 17 species of New Zealand geckos give birth to live young (usually twins) rather than laying eggs like many lizards.

The geckos I have photographed and posted on TN were all bred and kept by my friend Gareth Lusty (theLizardMan).
He kindly allowed me to photograph them in natural settings during a Department of Conservation field day on Mount Pirongia in the Waikato.

Hope you like this green beauty.

Cheers,Steve

Hello again Steve and again a few words to gecko's photo :)
As I see this group of reptile is also one of you favourite :)
This grean species looks very impressive, and great camouflaged among treen and bushes. The picture has very nice DOF and details, also sharpness are great. I like also point of view - species not in the centre thanks to that some free space is on the picture what cleary allow to compare reptile's size to other elements of nature :)
TFS and best regards from Poland,
Radomir

Hi Steve

I'm a very big fan of reptiles in general and i really love geckos, but i didn't have the chance to see and photorgaph one live yet, so these pictures of them are a special delight for me! :)
The pose you managed to catch here is terrific and the fact that with only f/2.8 you managed to get the entire body so well into focus is simply outstanding...your position and POV must have been ideal!
The vivid colors are awesome and the details are very clear and sharp, too.
Congratulation for such a good work!

Bravo and TFS
