Baby Black Swan with Mother Swan (Cygnus atratus)

I hope you like this little fellow. He /she was swimming / sailing along beside his / her mother, and I like the comparison of his / her cream fluffy feathers to his / her mother’s dark black / brown feathers.

The black swan is an Australian bird that flew into New Zealand in the 1860’s at the same time as it was being released to New Zealand, resulting in an explosion of numbers.

However, from the 1970s on farm silt run-off killed the water plants that swan depend on. Starving birds began to eat grass, leading to culls in which many thousands of the birds were killed until their numbers adapted to their impoverished circumstances.

In other areas, where water plants persist, swan numbers remain strong so most regions can still allow limited swan hunting opportunities.

Very cute baby swan, Superb capture. Great detail and the comp is spot on.
well done Janice...

Hi Janice.
What a wonderful composition following the frame of his/her mum with great detail and colour. Nice touch with the soft ripple of water in front of him showing movement and the comparison of colour between them.
Not sure about the head of mother swan being cut off like that, but thats individual preference.
Wonderful image,

Hello Janice,
Amazing that the cygnets of all the swan species are so similar, irrespective of what the will look like as adults!
This is a fine and well composed capture to show what this little guy will be like when he grows up.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Janice

Great composition with the 'reflected' neck forms. Good detail and colour.

Sorry this is even shorter than usual - the internet went down yesterday and I have only a few mins left to write crits!

Dear Janice
Cutie pie! I am sure you are going to receive a lot of Ooh’s and Aah’s on this one, which will be well deserved. This in a glorious image, with a high cuteness factor. First-class photography.
Thanks for sharing, it is much appreciated.
Warmest regards
