Yellow breasted Tomtit (South Island Male)

Range: Can be found in most forested areas throughout New Zealand including Stewart Island, but absent from large areas of farmland in the Waikato and Canterbury. Also on off shore islands, but not on Tiri Tiri Island.

Description - male bird:

Head, throat and upperparts: Black.
Frontal dot above bill: White.
Wings: Black with a conspicuous white wingbar.
Underparts: Pure white on the North Island bird and white, washed with yellow, on the South Island and Chatham Island birds.
Tail: Black with white edges.

Description - female bird:
Upperparts: Brownish.
Frontal dot above bill: Less conspicuous than on male bird and sometimes absent.
Wingbar: White, but less obvious than on male birds.
Chin and breast: Grey brown.
Underparts: Greyish.

Conspicuous characteristics:
The confiding nature of this bird is engaging. Birds seem to just arrive and they have the habit of peering down with head on one side.
Although usually to be found inside the forest, Tomtits will venture out for short spells from forest verges into cleared areas.
Birds often are seen clinging on to the side of trunks with head down. Birds often seek out people, look, and then fly off.

Call: Song, delivered by the male bird, is a fragile "sweedle sweedle sweedle swee". Male birds in nesting territories can be very vocal.

Nest: A bulky structure of twigs, fern, moss and cobwebs, lined with feathers and tree fern hairs, on a branch fork or a cavity in a bank. Up to 5 cream, yellow speckled eggs are laid.

Hi Pam,
of course you have an "exotic bonus" here in Europe for this bird few of us ever saw. But what a great job you did here! You used a flash to good advantage. All the details of this bird in a funny pose are excellent, the rusty feet in focus, well lighted. The composition, the background, all make this shot such a success. Thanks for the detailed note too. I make the pic a favorite of mine.
Best regards from wintery Switzerland

Hello Pam,
Fantastic photo of this Tomtit. Great sharp details, pose and colours. This Tomtit, the South Island Tomtit is the only Tomtit I know by photo. There are 5 other species in New Zealand. Have you ever seen them?
Regards,
Peter

Hello Pam,

What an amazing cute bird. Good composition. Good light and sharpness.
Well done,
Cheers,
Mariki

What a gorgeous shot of our wee tomtit. I like the fact you have caught it with it's wings up as you don't often see shots of it in this pose. The orange feet have me puzzled, as they are usually brown with only the soles being a yellow-orange. Must be a unique bird having these brightly coloured feet. Lovely feather detail and the catchlight in the eye adds to the inquisitive nature of these cute little birds. Well seen and caputured, TFS.
Cheers
Elizabeth

Wonderful capture.

This is gorgeous - perfect clarity, colors and bg. The bird I'm not familiar with, but it's an adorable critter which you've caught with incredible detail and texture and an action shot to boot! I think it's cool that the feet are orange! Wonderful capture - congrats. Penny

Hi Pam,
you have a fantastic gallery going on there! very impressive! this one caught my eye because of the pose i think.. looks a lot like the old 'suprised, what the hell was that flinch from the flash/shutter' pose. i'm quite familiar with that one heheh.
