My first visit to a butterfly garden with my new Canon 300D using a close-up +2 lens. My Canon 100mm macro lens has just been ordered ;)

Monarch Butterfly

The most common species of the milkweed butterflies. The monarch occurs mainly in North America. The adult has wings of a striking reddish-brown, with black veins and black borders with two rows of white dots. The wingspan is 10 cm (4 in). Each autumn the monarch butterfly migrates southwards to California, Florida, and Mexico. The longest flight known for a tagged adult is some 2,900 km (1,800 mi), from Ontario to Mexico. In January 2002, 250 million of these migrating butterflies were killed by a freak cold front in Mexico, one of the worst incidents of butterfly mortality on record. Some experts fear that deforestation may also have contributed to the massive death toll, as a reduced forest canopy is less effective at maintaining temperatures among the trees where the butterflies rest.

Hello Scott,

The colors are great, POV & DOF are excellent and details are sharp. I think you just cropped/framed a little too tight. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Welcome to TN Scott. This lovely Monarch is a very good first posting. Good composition, details and colours. Well done.

Hello Scott and welcome.

Very good first post. I have seen many Monarch B'flies recently and have two swan plants looking a little worse for ware at present as a few fat caterpillars eat their way to becoming a beautiful b'fly. Nice POV and exceelnt sharpness. May have needed a wee bit of contast, but that's a personal opinion. Very good work. Bring on more! Thanks.

Great picture Scott!
Focus and exposure are excellent.
Artistically the butterfly detach beautifully from a nice blured BG. Composition is very good to. TFS
