Many, many thanks go to Carlos, cmarzano, who recognized this orchid, Zygopetalum maxillare grows naturally on the trunk of species of treefern as one growing in the forests to the north of where he lives in Argentina.

There are approximately some 20 to 40 species of the Zygopetalum genus, known as "soft leaf" orchids because of their leathery, strap-like leaves. These extraordinary orchids produce brightly coloured flowers of greens, purples, burgundy, and raspberry shades in various exotic patterns. The blossoms have a fragrance reminiscent of the heavy perfume of a Hyacinth or Narcissus.

Most Zygopetalum species are from South America, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. terrestrial, with the majority of the species found in the higher elevations of Brazil. Zygopetalum maxillare grows naturally on the trunk of species of treefern, and is a small creeping species.

The Zygopetalum orchid was discovered in 1827, and named Zygopetalum from the Greek names zygon (yoke) and petalon (petal), referring to the fusing of sepals and petals with the base of the column. After over a 100 years, people are now starting to discover these beautiful orchids and Zygopetalums are becoming very popular.

Hi Janice
Great shot. I like the strange difference between the flower and leaf. Nice and sharp. I like your choice of square frame.
Regards Toni

I have never seen a blue orchid before! Beautiful colours, sharp and very good picture, as usual, Janice!

It's very nice. Details and colors on flower are very good.

Hallo Janice
This is might be very old for you, but it is new and appealing to me and it is going straight to my theme "My purple obsession". A very good presentation with wonderful colours and detail. I am sure if you look through my critiques given to fellow members, you’ll notice that the majority of them are awarded to photos containing something with the colour of purple. I love purple. Thanks for sharing this beautiful orchid with us. The colour and patterns are just perfect. Another striking creation from the Creator of all. A stunning close-up, with sharp details. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day.
Kind regards
Anna
