Hot Lips Puffball

This unusual looking puffball can be found growing from mossy banks and from the ground during autumn in beech forests throughout the southern part of New Zealand.
The fruiting body is about 20mm in diameter,brown and dotted with warts and the short stem is made up of twisted seaweed like strands.
Initially the fruiting body is covered by a scurfy layer which eventually falls away to reveal a pair of red lips.The spores of this fungus are forced out between the lips rather than being puffed into the air as with most puffballs.

I found this one growing from a mossy bank on the Coal Creek walkway at Runanga.
It was incredibly difficult to photograph.
Even on a mini tripod,in good light,my cameras sensors just would not pick up those reddish brown tones,focussing instead on the bright green mosses all around.I'd say it would have taken me over an hour to get this shot.There were dozens of blurry ones!

Hi Steve,
Looks familiar, he-he... You know what I'm talking about and thanks for Your kindness, thanx for teaching a lot of things about the NZ fungi to me. Nice close-up, great DOF and perfect natural colors. Not to mention a unique specie, which, or at least any similar, doesn't live in Europe at all. Tfs, also the interesting and informative note. Almost an hour of shooting... but this pic was worth waiting for. Cheers, László

despite the shallow DOF it's a good picture with fine natural colours. Even the surrounding is very nice, the moss is beautiful.
