The Aerodynamic Gannet

This is a gannet coming in to land at the Muriwai Gannet Colony, on the west coast of Auckland.

I spent a few hours there in January. The birds fly so magnificently and I was trying hard to focus on them as they were flying past us. It’s not easy, but I’m happy with this one...

Even the best flight engineers in the world could not design something superior to the aerodynamic gannet.

The gannet is not only perfectly adapted for flight it is also beautiful.

Each individual feather is streamlined, over lapping to form a perfectly smooth surface.

The feathers are light, just as their bones are, letting them float through the air on the edge of any wind.

Each individual feather has its own specific purpose but they work together to provide harmony and perfection in flight.

The gannet’s effortless grace and beauty is enchanting to watch.

The wing span of the gannet can reach an incredible 2 metres.

Hello Janice!

Great capture of flock of gannets - birds known to me from tv only :-) I like pose of your main subject with wide spreaded wings and irritated face :-) Excellent POV - you can fly higher than birds my friend :-)

I agree, Janice..The gannet is, indeed, a beautiful bird.
And this is a lovely shot!
Very well done!
