New Zealands largest cicada the Chorus cicada.

Family Hemiptera

Sp. Amphipsala zelandia.

Length approx 40 millimeters wings closed and a 80 millimeter wingspan.
These are most prevelant in warm summers in january when they gather in large numbers in sunny positions and the males form a choir to sing for a mate,
Hence the name Chorus Cicada.
