Papilio demoleus

I saw this attractive Chequered Swallowtail at the Butterfly House in Auckland, and I have just found it stored in a folder. I hope you like it.

This powerful flying butterfly tends to fly about one metre above the ground. The adult butterfly usually feeds from flowers of the food plant while on the wing, similar to hummingbirds.

The Chequered Swallowtail increases in number after rainy periods when its food plant flourishes. It is most common in the tropical and subtropical north of Australia.

The larval stage (caterpillar) of this species feeds on low-growing shrubby, perennial legumes with purple or pink flowers belonging to the family Psoralea (Fabaceae).

Chequered swallowtails are often seen drinking from puddles. They absorb moisture and nutrients from damp sand, tasting the sand with their feet. This is known as puddling.

If disturbed before it is ready for flying, such as early in the morning or while it is hardening its wings after emerging from its pupa, the butterfly will suddenly open its wings to its fullest extent. This exposes two pairs of eyespots (ocelli) on the wings and can startle bird predators in particular.

Large quantities of eggs are laid by females on the food plant. Most of these are eaten by various invertebrate predators that suck out the contents of the egg. Predation also occurs at the larval with and very few of the laid eggs surviving to reproduce.

Visit Bugs and Butterflies home page at http://www.zoo.org.au/animals/butterflies.htm for information about Butterfly Reproduction, Ten Steps to a Butterfly Friendly Garden and other butterfly fact sheets.

Thanks Heinz /Wallhalla15 for giving me the Papilio demoleus name...
