[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I challenge anyone to find jungle this dense.
This hard,cane-like vine is called Supplejack. Its Maori name is Kareao. It belongs to the family Smilacaceae and its botanical name is Ripogonum scandens. It is extremely common in lowland forests in New Zealand. The stems are 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter, dark brown to black, strongly jointed like bamboo. They have an affinity for very damp areas,in fact I have seen these several metres above a stream, putting out long aerial roots trying to reach the water. The flowers are 6-10 mm across and the vine produces bright red berries,about1 cm in diameter.
This vine can make progress through the bush very difficult.Often, whilst exploring new caves,I'll find the entrance completely barred by this plant. On photographic trips I often have to struggle through this stuff. If you try to step on it,it slips out from underfoot and whacks you in the shins. If you try to lift it over your head another bit comes down and strangles you.Often, the best way is either to lay down and crawl,or if its very dense,to 'crawl' over the top of it.(Now you know the trouble I have to go to for my shots,I'll expect full points every time...ha ha). There are only two plants that are worse to get caught up in,Bush Lawyer, and the lethal Onga Onga,or Tree Nettle, but thats another story.

This is a dense looking jungle, Steve. With foilage like this you are not perhaps "Steve Crochunter" :) Thanx for sharing the nature of your neck of the woods. I appreciate it.

This is not a jungle, but a mesh. You catured this very well and the shot clearly portrays the densness of the jungle. The colors are good and so is the exposure.

Thanks for posting
