Scientific Name: Hippopotamus amphibius

I saw this playful hippo at Aucklandís Zoo when Pam (Coasties) and I were there on Saturday. He/she and a friend were playing with an aluminium barrel, trying to grab it with their teeth. They were passing it from one to the other, and having a great time together. Look at the Workshop to see a shot of them in action.

Home: The rivers, lakes, swamps, and wallows of Africa

Description: The hippopotamus is an extremely large creature with a round body, short legs, and a big, broad head. They are brownish grey on top and a light pink colour underneath. The hippopotamus has its ears, nose, and eyes positioned on the top of its head so it can remain submerged/ underwater and still keep track of what is going on around it.

The Hippopotamus, whose name means "river horse", is a plant-eating water-loving giant. The centre of a hippo's day life is water. Like a hippo pool-party, sometimes hundreds of hippos, will share a territory of water during the day. Whether it's mating, playing, fighting or giving birth, hippo's all wet. The hippo's nightlife begins a few hours after sunset, when all the hippos file out of the water to graze on land by the light of the moon.

Hippo-Talk: Hippos make a variety of grunts, growls, screams and other sounds underwater to communicate with each other!

Hippos have huge mouths and teeth, even though they eat grass. A bull hippo's canines can grow to 28 inches long, and their mouths can open four feet wide!

Hi Janice,
Great capture, the low POV is awesome.
Nicely composed, good detail, colour and sharpness.

England have already given up before the game this weekend.
The England captain said that he doesn't expect to win!! Not the comments of someone you'd want leading your country!!
I shall still cheer them on.......meow!!!

Thanks for posting.

Nice shot of the hippo. They always seem so photogenic.

Good framing, nice focus, good colours and excellent composition.

The only thing is that the shot seems slightly of level? Maybe t is my imagination.
