Praying Mantis

I wasn't sure if this is the NZ Praying Mantis Orthodera Novaezealandiae, or the import from South Africa, which is steadily eating our NZ mantids and becoming unwelcome pests in NZ.

But now Mike Smith / Stretch has told me it is the South African import Miomantis caffra. The NZ species has the distinctive blue 'eye' spots on the inside of its fore legs, and judging from the swollen abdomen he thinks it is probably a female. Thanks Mike...

What is a Praying Mantis?

The praying mantids, or praying mantises, are carnivorous insects that belong to the family - Mantidae. There are about 2,000 species of mantids. They have a long prothorax and strong, spiny front legs held together in a praying manner, hence the name, “Praying Mantis”.

Praying mantises are about ¼ -12 inches according to the species. Their colours vary, ranging from light greens to pinks. Most mantids are pea green or brown. The tropical flower mantises, which resemble flowers, are usually light colours such as pink. Flower mantises, from Africa or the Far East, so closely resemble flowers that insects will often land on them to get nectar.

Camouflage is very important for the praying mantis' survival. Because they have so many enemies such as birds, they must blend in with their habitat to avoid being eaten.

They have a triangular-shaped head with a large compound eye on each side. Praying mantids are the only insect that turns its head from side to side in a full 180-degree angle. Their eyes are sensitive to the slightest movement up to 60 feet away. They have straight, leathery forewings and very powerful jaws used for devouring its prey.

Hi Janice,
excellent picture of that cunning looking mantis,
obviously trying to get away without losing its face.
Colours and details are perfect, and the composition is outstanding.
The mantis is taking the whole available diagonal space with a pose as elegant as that of a ballett dancer.
Just great! Thank you, and best wishes,
Peter

Excellent pose and POV. Very good details and perfect DOF.

Great work

What a spectacular pose and shot of this creature. Looks like she's posing just for you. Such interesting creatures I have them here in my yard and find them sometimes, although they're only about 3 inches across at the most. Very nice capture, the greens are so lovely the dark leaves highlighting her coloring well.

Dear Janice, fantastic capture. Soon I will be posting a photo of one of this guys from Brazil...I think they are around the world! Fantastic animal, they are poisoness but can easily defeat dangerous preys like poison spiders. Beautiful capture.

hello Janice,
Beautiful posting, the mantis looks like that is doing a karate movement. very well composed, nice Bg and details, only a bit brilliant in some parts.

Hernán

Kia Ora Janice
Well, if we can't beat you at rugby we have to try some other ways... (Bad joke.)
She seems to be very aware of you and your camera and gave you a great pose. What is it with women and a camera?
This is a lovely photo on all counts. I.e. composition, POV, exposure, DOF, and absolute perfect details. The colour is amazing and adds to the overall impact created by the shot.
Great work and TFS.

Loot
