Ferns at Murrays Bay, Auckland, New Zealand

This week I walked the track around the cliff where I live between the local beaches. It has great views of some of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, e.g. Rangitoto, Motutapu, Rakino, the Noiries, and also the East Coast Bays south of Murrays Bay and all the way to the eastern Auckland suburbs too.

I love ferns (did you know that?) and especially the ferns we have in New Zealand, where they grow in great abundance. We have nearly 200 native species alone occurring everywhere from the coast through to the country’s alpine regions.

Here you can see the wind blowing in the Tree fern above me. I like how it contrast against the white cloud.

You can also see a straggly-looking Cabbage Tree / Cordyline growing behind it too.

Hello Janice,
I like your shot partly because it is sharp, well composed with a good POV and because I love tree ferns.

Hi Janice, I like your composition of this big fern tree. They are realy special plants, so old! Nice contreating details.
Well done and TFS

Hello Janice,

Tree ferns! Heard of them, never seen them.
Photo looks so... more than exotic. Like a Paleozoic (Cambrian) era picture. Now I wait for a dinosaur-like huge amphibian to show up around the corner... or maybe a 70 cm ancient dragonfly. :-)

Cheers, Petru

Hello Janice,
I love the clear sky and the feeling of fresh air in this well composed iconic image of a tree fern!
Thank you, and best regards,

Hi Janice
Nice POV of this picture.TFS

Amazed with this one.
This are FERNS and the rest poor little plants in comparison :D
I wonder what the "wood" of such a trunk looks like. Is it hard wood or just a thick fleshy stem like in tropical plants?
Thanks so much for sharing this one, very nice and descriptive shot.
Best regards, felipe.
