This is Oz, the new male Sumatran Tiger at Auckland Zoo. He is a magnificent animal. This image was taken through hand smeared dirty glass, but I am thrilled with the result, and the way he is looking right down the lens. He has now been joined by female Sumatran tiger Molek, who I have not yet seen, but maybe this Sunday I can visit and see if I can take a photo to share with you. Thanks for looking!

Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)

Sumatran tigers are one of 5 types, or subspecies, of tigers left in the world. There are around 500 left world-wide and urgent action needs to be taken if we are to stop the remaining tigers from becoming extinct.

Tigers are carnivores and have awesome eating equipment, including the biggest canine teeth of any predator - they're up to 10 times bigger than your teeth! Their favourite foods are deer, pigs and fish.

A tiger roar can travel up to 2km. Tail twitching also tells a tale, especially of the excitement of an impending hunt.

Night-time vision is six times better than that of a human. Hunting is usually at night. Stripes provide camouflage against the shadows of leaves; prey is often unaware of the stalking tiger.

Unlike most cats, tigers are keen swimmers. Water may be used as a way of cooling off.

90% of the world tiger population has been lost this century with the:
• Development of better firearms.
• Colonisation, which brought the 'sport' of tiger hunting.
• Habitat destruction, for farmland and timber.
• Skin and fur used in fashion.
• Continued use of body parts for folk medicine.

700 and such a good one. Little much can be said about it really. It is stunning and wonderful and beautiful.

If I had to be pic nitty, I would have said that the composition was slightly out, in that the empty space above the head has resulted in the eyes and nose not beign on the thirds BUT if that is all I can find, you are doing very well and you know it!

take care and thanks for a very beautiful, detailed and sharp and above all fantastic post.

Hi Pam,
Congratulation for your 700th post! Seven hundreds, seven-zero-zero! That must be a record at TN.
This is a beautifully sharp potrait of sumatran tiger [from my hometown]. Few weeks ago I read in local newspaper, it attacked villagers in South Sumatra.
Superb shot and excellent PP works.

Very Well Done :D

magnificent is quite appropriate for this tiger and for this pic.
Not much to add, as the whole thing is perfect.

Hi Pam,

Absolutely majestic this tiger! You've captured its beauty very well. Great isolation of the portrait from the nicely blurred BG. Very nice details and natural colors. I can't believe this photo was taken through hand smeared dirty glass. It looks perfectly sharp and free of any dirt or reflections. I like your POV. You've found a good angle that keeps unwanted objects from the ZOO cage out of frame. Also the DOF helps here. Good note too! Excellent work overall!

Hi Pam and Congrats!
Well said in the forum posting. Excellent post to mark the occasion with..
You've always been one of my favorites :)

Pam, great animal for a great post!! Oz's eyes are really wonderful!!
Thanks, Enrico.

What an incredible portrait of this magnificent animal. well done.
