Australasian Gannet - Morus serrator

This colony of Gannets are unusual in that they're actually nesting on the mainland in Muriwai Regional Park, as opposed to offshore. This particular colony is home to around 1200 breeding pairs.

The Australasian Gannet is migratory, and flies between New Zealand and Australia - most commonly landing on the Eastern and Southern coasts 2000km away, although occasional birds apparently reach Western Australia and Queensland.

Most of a Gannet's diet is fish, which they catch by plunge diving as they fly over the ocean. Gannets have been known to dive from as high as 140ft - the only reason they survive is they have shock absorbing air sacs inside their skulls!

Gannets are one of the longest lived sea bird species, estimates put their lifespan at around 25-38 years! They're usually monogamous too, and will partner for life. If you're interested more about the Takapu (as the bird is known to the Maori) can be found here

Welcome to TN Adrian, its good to have your exelent images here.
This one is no exception you can feel the bird floating on the updraft.
Very nicely exposed all feathers visible right down to the one out of place on the near wing. DOF also cover wing tip to wing tip Nice one.

Hi Adrian
Nice with the white on the black BG, and the note, too, is good. The whites and blacks always have a battle for dominance, but I think the exposure here is fine

Hello Adrian - glad to see you here too. Very nice picture of a beautiful seabird. Well controlled light with no burn in the white feathers and a nice dark background to set him off. Educational note too.

Beautiful capture of this gannet, one of the breeds of seabird I'd most like to see in real life because of their beautiful heads ;-))
To repeat what's been said before: Good details, DOF and light.

Lovely image Adrian, you can ujust feel the motion in th is one, the details are clear as are the colours, very well taken

Hi Adrian, I love the contrast of the white bird and dark background! Quite a chore in catching a white bird with no burn! Excellent job!

Nothing to add technically, it's a textbook composition about bird photography : everything tack sharp, wings are widely spread, it flies through the pic the correct -westerner- way from left to right.

Talking about color correction, I'm quite sensitive to a typically magenta/blue color cast the Provia (or the Provia scan) gives. I experimented selecting with the level eyedropper some neutral grey pixels over its feathery or shadow areas, it gives back a very pleasant warmer tone, specially for the background; You should try and see whether you like it better than the colder version.

Great action shot good note
Well done

Perfeita, muito boa...
Contraste, cores, ângulo.
Bons dados em NOTAS!

Hi Adrian

This is a stunning shot of the Australasian Gannet. The dark BG helps the light details of the bird stand out. Exposure is excellent. Nice POV across the wingspan. I love visiting Muriwai. Nice work. Thanks.

Muito bonita
