Australasian Gannet (Morus serrator)

Description: The male and female Australasian Gannet are about 84 to 95 cm and are similar in plumage. Most of the body is white, with dark tips on the major wing feathers and the inner tail feathers. The head is buff-yellow and the bill pale blue-grey with striking black borders to the bill sheaths. In immature birds, the head and upperparts are mostly brown with scattered amounts of white spotting. Small flocks are seen soaring above the ocean. A bird will suddenly fold its wings back and dive spectacularly into the water.

Distribution and Habitat: Australasian Gannets are seabirds and are a familiar sight off the southern coast of Australia. The species is also found in the south-east, to New Zealand.

Food and feeding: Australasian Gannets are expert fishers. Birds soar 10 m or more above the surface of the water, herding fish into dense shoals, then fold their wings back and dive into the water to catch their prey. The fish are grasped with the aid of small backward-pointing serrations along the edges of the bill. A bird only stays under the water for about ten seconds, but the fish is normally swallowed before the bird reaches the surface.

Breeding: In Australia, the Australasian Gannet breeds in dense colonies on islands off Victoria and Tasmania. Breeding colonies are also found off the coast of New Zealand, mostly off the North Island. In Australia, eggs are laid in October to November, with chicks hatching after about 44 days. The young leave the nest after 100 days, but do not reach breeding maturity until about six or seven years old.

Hi Pam!

I'm sure that this is most surprising picture of Gannet I've ever seen! POV is superb. Bird's face looks like old, japanese painted mask. Blue accents around eyes are great, too. Just fantastic work my friend!

Amazing photo Pam.Interesting motive. Nice capture with excellent sharpness and colours. POV. Thanks for sharing. Stefan

Hi Pam

Wooow! What a full frontal aproach! Magnificent!
This is usually really hard to get! A 100% look to the camera on a perect perpendicular line with the sensor :) Smashing!
The eye(s)-contact here is amazing and that blue circle around them is simply hypnothizing! It just draws your attention until the point you can't let go :)
Super sharp details, wonderful natural colors and tones and an impeccable DOF, too, which isolate the head of this beautitful gannet from that lovely blurred BG.
GREAT work!

Bravo and TFS
horia

Hello Pam, peculiar and pretty bird, excellent macro and color. Greetings.

Great and razor sharp close up Pam with amazing colors, impeccable focus and sharpness and perfect details taking advantage of to the maximum the illumination of the ambience.
I love the point of view very well combined with the elected framing completely uncentered, leaving an ideal bottom as backdrop.
The election of the Photoshop frame also collaborates definitively with the composition.
Cheers!
Ricardo

Hi Pam,
Good compo, good colors, good background, good POV, good...go on:-)
Maybe f8 or f11 would have given a bit more DOF though; the top of the beak should not have been soft doing so. But as it is an overall quite intriquing and wonderful image this is not really distracting.

Hi Pam,
Thats a great shot, the eyes are really hypnotic, the focus is sharp though a little greater DOF would have helped the tip of the beak.

Hello Pam,
perfectly focussed, excellently composed in assymetrical tension. Very smooth subtle colours.
A bird's portrait of mesmerizing qualities.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Pam,

The portrait looks very nice. The bird's eyes are intense and penetrating. Good picture.

Murali Santhanam

A great portrait of a lovely bird, Pam. The colours are great of course and the background is a perfect complement. DOF is slightly shallow as I'm sure you are aware, the tip of the beak is not quite sharp, but the eyes are and that's the most important. Looking at your EXIF data you could have afforded to go to F/8 and still have 1/600 or thereabouts. That would have probably made the beak sharper but maybe spoiled your background!

bonjour^pam
magnifique ce portrait,j'adore le regard de ce fou de bassan.
superbe.

Hi Pam,
Stunner of a shot. Technically hard to fault. Love the warm colour balance.

Hello Coasties,

I have some bad news, and some more bad [bad] news; but also some good news...

Let me start in order...
The small bad news is that my previous critique is / was lost apparently... But my "Theming" has stood the test of time! [ Thus far ]

The really bad news is here where your image is shown by a thief on his /her gallery!

The "good" news is that I will renew my smiley!

Sorry not enough time to go thru a full critiques again.
The fact the shot was stolen is proof enough of its great quality!

TFS,
Jay
PS Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Wow! great shot! Very nice close-up. And good depth of field to keep the face in sharp focus but blur out the BG. Excellent work.
