[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
When I first posted this I had it down as Microsorum scandens, found in New Zealand and Australia.
However, after a little more research,I can now identify this as Microsorum novae-zelandiae, which is restricted to New Zealand.
These ferns never grow on the ground. They always cling to tree trunks, and can sometimes be seen perching high in the trees 30 metres or more above the ground.
Microsorum novae-zelandiae is only found in the warmer North Island, from the Coromandel Peninsula down to Wellington.
The stems are stouter than other microsorums at 4 - 10mm and are covered in large straw coloured scales. The fronds bear up to 25 pairs of leaflets and can be up to 1.2 metres long.
The dome like sori (spore producing things) on the leaf underside are large and brown.
I love to see these ferns in the bush. They give the native forest a truly tropical look.

Great shape Steve - it looks like Christmas tree :-) I love sunlight and saturated greens. Very good note also!

I love seeing any fern in the bush Steve, but this one is so different to what I see up north. It is a beautiful fern. TFS.

Stevie, excelent shot, my main man. WoW, you guys have BIG ones, we have SMALL ones. LOL
Well done on this capture and details.

Very beautiful ferns! I've always been quite partial to ferns and we have a number of varieties in the forests here. I never tire of seeing them. This one is very interesting growing up the tree trunk.
