Here you can see a very "young" (newly emerged specimen) with wings still very delicate and sensitive.

Agraulis vanillae (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gulf Fritillary)

Agraulis vanillae maculosa Stichel, 1908

Upperside bright orange with black markings; 3 black-encircled white dots on forewing leading edge. Underside brown; forewing with orange at base; both wings with elongated, iridescent silver spots.

The caterpillar of the gulf fritillary grows to approximately 4 cm in length and is bright orange in color and covered in rows of black spines on its head and back. The spines are soft to the touch and do not sting. However, the larva are poisonous if eaten, as the bright coloration advertises.

The chrysalis is approximately 3 cm long; it is mottled brown and looks like a dry leaf.

Wing span: 6.3 - 9.5cm

South America north through Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies to the southern United States. Wanders north to the central United States; rare northward. Common throughout Texas.

Caterpillar host plants:
Various species of passion-vine including maypops (Passiflora incarnate) and running pop (P. foetida).

Adult food:
Nectar from lantana, shepherd's needle, cordias, composites, and others.

Hello Krzysztof,
what a striking butterfly!
It definately looks fresh!
Excellent colours that are natural yet mind-blowingly vivid.
Superb clarity that conserves lots of detail and keeps the photo razor-sharp and noise-less.
Clean BG that is nicely blurred and non-distracting.
I think a more diagonal composition would have been more effective yet this one still works well.
Great POV.
Thanks for sharing this one!

Hi Krzysztof, elegant butterfly with beautiful colors, good focus, splendid sharpness and great details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Beautiful! Very vibrant orange as it is typical for "fresh out of the box" Gulf Fritillaries. Great detail, too. Cheers, Klaus

Hello Krzysztof,
How nice to see such a fine image of the Gulf Fritillary that is taken in the wild instead of a buttefly farm. In fact, I can't fault it as it is perfect in every way and I taking it in as a favourite!
Thankd for sharing this beauty,
