Bella (Hypanartia bella) Hubner

Bella is a medium-sized nymphalid genus whose members all have an orange, brown or reddish-brown dorsal surface, with a variable number of opaque, translucent or transparent forewing spots, an intricately patterned ventral surface and angular wing shapes, with a hindwing tail of variable length.
The genus contains some of the most widespread and common butterfly species in the Neotropics, most of which were described before the middle of the nineteenth century.

Hypanartia species occur in a wide range of habitat, from primary forest to secondary growth and extensive areas of scrub, but the two main lineages within the genus exhibit different habitat preferences.
Members of the paullus group typically occur in areas with extensive secondary growth, dry forest or along forest edges, whereas members of the dione group occur in more intact, humid forest habitats.

Males are generally more commonly encountered than females, particularly in the dione group, and are usually observed flying rapidly about roadsides, paths and rivers, stopping frequently to 'puddle'.
Puddling behaviour involves the uptake of minerals through feeding at damp sand or mud, which provides males with sodium ions, among other possible nutrients, which are important in reproduction.
Males are also attracted to dung and carrion, which probably provide similar nutrients to rotting fish, and rotting fruits, which presumably provide carbohydrates.
Both sexes occasionally nectar at a wide variety of flowers, especially those in the Asteraceae.
Solitary males are often encountered 'perching', a specific behaviour adapted for mate location, consisting of waiting at particular topographic sites that are frequented by females.
Such sites include large clearings or forest edges, more enclosed forest light gaps or open highland vegetation, particularly on ridgetops, and these areas are vigorously patrolled and defended against intruding males.

As is typical for Nymphalini, the majority of recorded foodplants for Hypanartia are among Urticaceae and Ulmaceae, but there is also a single report of Piperaceae.
The white eggs are laid singly, the mature larvae are variable in colour and spiny, and the pupae are pale green with reflective silver markings.
The larvae are similar to those in Vanessa and Anartia Hübner, and sew hostplant leaves together with silk to make shelters in which they rest and even pupate.

Hypanartia extends from the southern U.S.A and the Greater Antilles to Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, encompassing the entire Neotropical Region.
However, it is predominantly a montane genus, reaching its peak diversity in the Andean countries of Ecuador and Peru, which each harbour ten recorded (potentially twelve) species.

Hello Ricardo, good to see you back here. We wondered where you had gone to. It's a good picture, nice composition and details. My only nit is that it is a little underexposed. Very well done and welcome back.

Hola Ricardo,
Welcome back, my friend!
Ohh, yes, great pose of the butterfly of course! :)

Congrats Ricardo,

Hola Ricardo,
veo que has retornado con las fotos, y esta es muy buena en detalles y acercamiento, el foco tambien es de destacar, con buena profundidad de campo. Lo único que para mi gusto está oscura, pero el artista sos vos, es solo mi opinión.

Ricardo, another stunning shot from you. Colors that blend well and a great contraste. Razorsharp details and a good composition too. Congratulations, Didier.

Hi Ricardo so good to see you back on site safe and hoefully well, a lot of people made enquiries as to your where abouts when you stopped posting suddenly, and no replies came from Emails to you, so it is good to see you back and inaction again.
a very dark but sharp shot I personally like moody shots so TFS and welcome back ;0))))))))))))

Hi Ricardo,
With the limited options you had, you created a super beautiful photo. The soft light is bringing out the colors beautifully. Your close up is perfect and the colors are super.

Salut Ricardo

Hello Ricardo

A huge welcome back!!!. You have been gone a very long time. This post is a magnificent way to celebrate your return. I am currently away on holiday and working from my notebook, but everything looks spot on to me. :-)

Deserves full points on all accounts, Ricardo.
TFS and take care.

Hi Ricardo,
Excellent macro! Sharp and clear detail, very nice colour and great POV.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello Ricardo,
beautiful shot, excellent in every aspect!
Sharpness is amazing, very well done with that slow shutter speed.
The "eye to eye" point of view culd not be chosen in better and more lively way, showing the underside of wings perfectly clear all over, and the upperside in well distinguishable good order, too. Details on the eyes and hairy body are just lovely.
The darkness of that hideaway before sunset has been perfectly captured. It looks very moody and cosy.
A wonderful image that is much more than just descriptive! Perfect notes, too.
Thank you! Best regards,

Hello Ricardo,
What a beautiful shot! I really like the pose of the butterfly and this beautiful little face you can admire with great details. You didn't use flash for this one and I think this is beautiful. Those colors seem very natural. I like this very good POV and composition too. Those colors are really well saturated and I appreciate this great DOF that let us see a beautiful BG.
