Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) photographed in Yanacocha reserve on the slopes of Volcan Pichincha,at around 3400 mt altitude, just an hour outside of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. The reserve protects a large area (960 ha) of Polylepis woodland on the slopes of Volcan Pichincha.

Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) is a species of hummingbird from South America and the sole member of the genus Ensifera.

E.ensifera has a 4'' beak which is longer than its body (excluding the tail); it is noted as the only species of bird to have a bill longer than the rest of its body.

At rest it sits with its beak held up vertically to reduce neck strain. It is found between 1700-3500m, it is commonest at 2500-3000m, & is sedentary. It lives in humid to semi humid upper montane forest and forest edges, sometimes at patches of of shrubs in the Páramo. Páramos are zones of elevation found in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Northern Peru & Venezuela. They have a very difficult & variable, though not extreme, climate, often ranging daily from wet, cold & windy to sunny & warm. It is known to feed from flowers with long pendant floral tubes.

Hi Selen

What an amazing bird I have never seen this before the bill is just incredible it looks at the same length as the bird, nicely composed with a fine pose and POV, you have captured the iridescent colours on the Feathers very nicely.

TFS Hilary :o)

Hi Selen,
Yes, this is a spectacular bird. This is the adult female of the species. The bill of the male is even longer. Nice photo!

Hi Selen,
it's amazing that a bird can have such a long beak! It remembers me to Pinoccio ;-)
A beautiful shot, thanks and greetings

Hosgeldin Selen. I see that it was worth the long trip. This is such an interesting bird. I wonder how it can even balance itself with that beak.
Best wishes,
PS: What's up with the flash :)?

Yes. I would believe this one goes for the business book of record. What a bill. Strange that such one is so little famous.
1st time I see it. I would have remembered.
Very interesting pic and note.

Hi Selen

This is one fantastic capture!
It's truely amazing to see such a long beak at such a small bird. It's practically longer than it's body...how cool is that? :))
The details here in your capture are terrific and all the colors came out right.
Splendid side POV and also DOF, that blurrs the BG so nicely.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Selen,
This bird is really amazing and your shot fantastic in spite of the, presumably, poor light in the rainforest! Excellent POV and great details and colours.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Merhabalar! Ecuador'dan harika kareler çekmişsiniz bize. Bu mucize gagalı kuş, bulanık arka planla şahane bir kompozisyon oluşturmuş. Elinize sağlık.
