Sword-billed Hummingbird
Ensifera ensifera

Another pose of the same Sword-billed Hummingbird, the background is unfortunately very busy...

Photographed in Yanacocha reserve on the slopes of Volcan Pichincha,at around 3400 mt altitude, just an hour outside of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. The reserve protects a large area (960 ha) of Polylepis woodland on the slopes of Volcan Pichincha.

Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) is a species of hummingbird from South America and the sole member of the genus Ensifera.

E.ensifera has a 4'' beak which is longer than its body (excluding the tail); it is noted as the only species of bird to have a bill longer than the rest of its body.

At rest it sits with its beak held up vertically to reduce neck strain. It is found between 1700-3500m, it is commonest at 2500-3000m, & is sedentary. It lives in humid to semi humid upper montane forest and forest edges, sometimes at patches of of shrubs in the Páramo. Páramos are zones of elevation found in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Northern Peru & Venezuela. They have a very difficult & variable, though not extreme, climate, often ranging daily from wet, cold & windy to sunny & warm. It is known to feed from flowers with long pendant floral tubes.

Merhaba Selen,
Bu kuşun bu kadar uzun gagası olduğunu hiç farketmemiştim.Böyle uçmak herhalde zor oluyordur:)Kuşun parlak gözleri, renkleri ve gagası tüm dikkati üzerinde topluyor, arka planın kalabalıklığı fark edilmiyor bile.Ellerine sağlık!

Hi Selen,
This is an awesome bill and it really looks like a sword. How does it manage with it, must be bumping around with it, ha ha. Very sharp image with crisp details and colours on its plumage. Excellent POV and a superb composition. Very educative note too. Kudos.

Hi Selen,
That is one LONG beak for a small bird. You have composed the photo well (not like you had much of a choice with that beak, hehe). A well seen and displyed subject .
Great shot,

Matt.

Hi Selen,
this bird is marvelous - I'm not sure if it is so happy about such a long beak - but it looks very abstract and you captured it so sharp and brilliant, thanks
