Magnificent Frigatebird (female)
Fregata magnificens

The larger of the two frigatebirds found in Galapagos, up to 1.10m long and with a wingspan of up to 2.45 m. Frigatebirds have the largest wingspan-to-weight ratio of any species of bird and are extremely able and skilled fliers. The male is entirely black with a purplish sheen on its back and a red goular, or throat, pouch, which is only visible during the breeding season. The female is slightly larger than the male and has a white breast and shoulders, but it is otherwise completely black. Immatures have a white head, neck and breast.

Frigatebirds eat a wide range of food including fish, small crustaceans and newly hatched Green Turtles (chelonia mydas) which they pick up off the beach almost as soon as they emerge from the nest, and sometimes before. They may fish directly from the surface of the sea, or will frequently chase other species , such as the Blue-footed Boobies (Sula nebouxii) or Red-billed Tropic birds and force it to disgorge its recent catch, often actually catching hold of the tail feathers of both of these species, shaking them until they disgorge their catch, and then catching the disgorged fish before it hits the water.

An insubstantial nest of twigs is built for breeding, in low trees or shrubs close to the shore, often using twigs stolen from other frigatebirds. The courtship includes an acrobatic aerial display and the male pumping up his large, bright red, goular pouch and uttering an unwordly ullulating thrill. A single egg is laid which is incubated by both parents for some 42 days. The young fledge after some 90 days.
Best viewed: throughout the islands, inshore and at their breeding sites. . North Seymour; Floreana-Gardner; Isabela- Punta Moreno; San Christobal- Wreck Bay, Kicker Rock, Punta Pitt; Genovesa.

Hi Selen

Wonderful capture - you did extremely well to get such a sharp cature with such good eye contact. I spent ages trying to get a good shot of the Christmas Island Frigate and only managed a couple of decentish shots (the sky was overcast for most of the time which didn't help).

Hi Selen

The name does justice for the bird - it is truly magnificent!
But you couldn't just take a picture of this Frigatebird, you had to include something else in the frame - that terrific moon in the BG that just looks like the cherry on top of the cake...simply magnificent!
Regarding the technical elements of the shot - i love the exposure, focus and POV.
The exposure is simply perfect and you managed to get a well balanced light in all the areas of the bird; due to that, you got exceptional details in both the bright, sunny parts - like the chest - but also good ones in the dark under-wings.
The focus is impeccable as usual and therefore the sharpness is brilliant and the bird is presented with tremendous details.
The POV is of course terrific - both for the bird but surely for the integrated moon too.
So really...a question comes to mind: is there any nit in this picture? Well, my answer is NO...this is just the way it should be!

BRAVO and TFS
Horia

PS: How did you manage to get so close to it? Only 100mm????? WOW!!!

Hi Selen,
Outstanding in-flight shot and a fabulous expression on the eyes captured. The lighting is fantastic and against the blue sky as BG the Frigatebird looks majestic. The Moon adds a fine drama and I like the shape of its wings. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.
