A picture of a dragonfly...

Seeing so many dragonflies magnificently photographed in TN, I wanted to do a test with my Canon compact and take a picture of these beautiful insects.

Our dragonflies are quite difficult to photograph, very rarely let me come closer to them, and often shoot out flying when I am about to photograph them.

I already have taken some photos of dragonflies this year, but so far none had allowed me to photograph close up. In fact most of the photos of dragonflies have done using between 3X zoom 5x whit not macro mode ... although I think some are good and I hope to post it in TN soon.

But last Saturday, I found a dragonfly a bit (only a bit, OK) more cooperative, she stopped to rest in a small branch of fern and stood still for a few minutes! So I took the chance and started with a picture whith Autofocus (AF) in Macro mode and flash to 33%, I noticed that the light was not sufficient and the focus is not hooked, then I set the shtter speed in 1/320s (before in 1/500s) and set the camera in Manual Focus (MF) and I selected the option to "Auto Focus Security" that allows to automatically adjust the focus from manual focus point. This helped to solve the focus problem, then I shot several photos, and gained a bit of optical zoom up to 2X in order to achieve a close-up even a bit like those pictures of dragonflies I've seen, taken with cameras of highest caliber. Unfortunately, the dragonfly decided to leave when I had about a dozen photos. However, this picture posted today I felt good enough to be my first attempt to photograph details of these insects in close-up. I think I should have changed the opening and experiment with f/4 or f/5, this would have give me a more wider focus to this that concentrate only on the eye and the head of the insect. but unfortunately, as I said, this dragonfly flew away!

I hope soon to find another "cooperative dragonfly" and can do better focus on the rest of the body structure of the insect.

Anyway, I must say that I enjoyed those 4 or 5 minutes photographing this insect. It's been over a year I take pictures, and in fact every time I do, I discover something new!

Hello Jesus,
a very good close-up picture with good sharpness and lot's a details.
The colours are really fine but maybe it's a bit too much flash.
The best time for the dragonfly at least up here, is early mornings after a cold wet night, then they are co-operative when they are warming up.
Well done.
Best regards
Gert

Hello Jesús,
This close-up macro of a dragonfly is sharp and the lateral POV shows the features of the head and thorax with fine sharpness. Though the use of flash provides a nice contrasting dark Bg, I think the subject is too bright and there are some flash reflections. For these reasons I try to avoid using flash, but at times poor lighting demands it.
Thanks and best wishes,
Ivan

hello Jesus
very fine and impressive close up that offers good details and colours, perhaps more light than that it needed, the compact flash is not the best way(and why the red eye mode)the composition and the background are splendidly!
